Last of Us has become the latest must-see TV show, with its powerful depiction of post-apocalyptic life after a dangerous fungus infects most of civilization. But if you can’t get enough of creepy zombies or creative ways to wipe people off the planet, there are a ton of great movies and TV shows just a click away.
Check out a few of our favorites that hit the same notes—whether you’re looking to up the creep factor or even find a post-apocalyptic comedy to enjoy.
Zombie Movies and TV Shows
Zombies have been employed in movies and shows in all kinds of delightfully diabolical ways—whether they drag along or zip at superhuman speeds.
Všichni jsme mrtví
What happens when zombies hit a high school? Last year’s top-rated Netflix show, All of Us Are Dead, gives us a horrifying glimpse, filled with emotional tearjerkers, grisly zombie gore, and crazy turning scenes that will make your jaw drop (can we take a moment to appreciate the insanely flexible zombie extras?)

Království
This Netflix predecessor to Všichni jsme mrtví takes place in a more medieval setting (16th-century Joseon, to be exact), but the special effects are nowhere near medieval. The story follows the Prince of Joseon, who attempts to investigate the «mysterious illness» plaguing the King, only to realize he’s turned into a freaking zombie! As all zombie infections do, it spreads, and he finds himself caught in the middle of a deadly epidemic, all the while trying to stop his political opponents from seizing the throne. It’s the political thriller-zombie horror fusion you never knew you needed.

Černé léto
Struktura Černé léto is a bit atypical (albeit good) in that it shows disjointed, out-of-order timeline vignettes that eventually come together into a cohesive storyline. It features a whole lot of interesting characters, but fair warning that you really shouldn’t get too attached to any of them.

Chodící mrtvoly
A zombie roundup simply wouldn’t feel complete without this classic series, which wrapped its story in late 2022. Serving up horror, tears, laughs, and more with each episode, the show follows a group of survivors fighting their way through the treacherous, zombie-infested remains of what was once the United States. You can binge your way through the entire 11 seasons of Chodící smrt nyní.

You’ve probably heard this movie reference scattered throughout Všichni jsme mrtví. Undeniably South Korea’s top zombie flick of all time, it revolves around a man and his estranged daughter who become trapped on a speeding train during a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak in South Korea. Blood and gore aside, it’s also packed with a lot of heart as the family tries to mend their broken relationship whilst fighting for survival—tears will most definitely ensue.

Teplé orgány
Want to quench your inner romantic and zombie craving in one go? Based on the famous book (which, BTW, is hands-down the most emotional and beautifully worded story about a raging zombie apocalypse you’ll ever read), the plot revolves around a mentally astute zombie named R who can experience people’s memories when he eats their brains. R falls in love with a human, and becomes more human himself in the process. If the survivalist and romance aspect isn’t enough to keep you captivated, R’s dry sense of humor and quirky perspective on life definitely will.

No matter how you want to ring in Halloween this year — whether that’s something creepy, gory, romantic, downright terrifying, or not scary at all — there’s probably a zombie movie out there for you.
From the movie that defines the genre directed by the “Father of the Zombie Film” George A. Romero to a TV show that made its way into the monoculture earlier this year, zombie movies and films have become a mainstay in horror.
S filmy jako Noc oživlých mrtvých a Zombieland a ukazuje jako Chodící mrtvoly and all of the spinoffs that go along with it, we rounded up 14 of the best zombie movies and shows to watch this Halloween.
So cozy up, flip off the lights (or keep ’em on, we don’t judge!) and settle in for a spooky movie night full of the undead.
Chodící mrtvoly (2010-2022)
What kind of zombie movie and show list would this be if we didn’t include one of the biggest TV franchises out there? Chodící mrtvoly takes place after modern civilization has fallen due to a zombie apocalypse and centers on the human survivors as they form groups and confront other survivors. The long-running series also spawned five spin-offs: se bojí chodící mrtvoly, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Tales of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Dead City, a The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. A sixth, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, will premiere next year.
Noc oživlých mrtvých (1968)
Everything you may think of when you think about the characteristics of zombie movies owe a lot to Noc oživlých mrtvých. George A. Romero’s horror film about an apocalypse introduced the flesh-eating undead that we now think of as zombies. Romero also made five sequels, including Úsvit mrtvých a Den smrti.
Zombieland (2009)
To není všechno doom and gloom in the zombie genre. Zombieland is a comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin that follows a group of human apocalypse survivors that take a cross-country road trip to find a zombie-free place to settle. In 2019, a sequel, Zombieland: Poklepejte, byl vydán.
Last of Us (2023-)
Though the creatures in Last of Us, HBO’s hit apocalypse drama from earlier this year, don’t look like your typical zombie movie zombies, the mass infection ravaging the country in the series turns people into zombie-like creatures. The series stars Pedro Pascal as a smuggler tasked with getting the immune Ellie (Bella Ramsay) across the country to safety.
Soumrak mrtvých (2004)
Speaking of movies that owe a lot to Romero’s work, Edgar Wright’s comedy (which he cowrote with star Simon Pegg) features references to Noc oživlých mrtvých, Den smrti, a samozřejmě, Úsvit mrtvých, Kde Shaun gets its punny name from. Pegg stars as a directionless sales man who suddenly has to save family, friends, and the city of London from a sudden zombie apocalypse.
Světová válka Z (2013)
Based on the 2006 novel by Max Brooks, 2013’s Světová válka Z stars Brad Pitt as a former UN investigator who travels the globe looking for a solution to a sudden zombie outbreak.
V těle (2013-2014)
Running just nine episodes total, V těle is an existential take on the zombie apocalypse, which sees formerly deceased people with Partially Deceased Syndrome reintroduced to society after undergoing therapy to rid them of any “rabid” symptoms that caused them to murder in the past. The show specifically focuses on one young man and the ways in which he faces internal guilt and prejudice from his family and the people in his town upon his return home.
Vlak do Busanu
Set mostly on a high speed train from Seoul to Busan, this hit Korean horror flick follows the passengers as a zombie apocalypse breaks out and threatens the safety of everyone on the train.
28 Days Later (2003)
Another movie that took great inspiration from Noc oživlých mrtvých is Danny Boyle’s 2003 post-apocalyptic horror film 28 Days Later, which stars Cillian Murphy as Jim, who awakens from a coma 28 days after a viral outbreak leads to societal collapse. Boyle himself doesn’t consider it to be a “zombie film,” but it reinvigorated the genre following its release. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, byl vydán v 2007.
Úsvit mrtvých (2004)
In 2004, Zach Snyder made his directorial debut with Úsvit mrtvých, a remake of Romero’s 1978 horror film of the same name (which itself was a sequel to Noc oživlých mrtvých… see, everything comes back to that movie!). It follows a group of survivors who hunker down in an abandoned shopping mall as a zombie apocalypse rages on. In 2021, Synder released Armáda mrtvých, a spiritual sequel to Úsvit mrtvých, that follows a Las Vegas casino heist during a zombie apocalypse.
Všichni jsme mrtví (2022)
Another Korean export, this miniseries, which aired on Netflix, is set at a high school overrun by zombies after a science teacher’s experiment goes horribly wrong. A group of students are forced to band together to fight their way out of the school and to safety.
Teplé orgány (2013)
Moving over to the zombie romance genre, one notable movie is 2013’s Teplé orgány. Told from the zombie R’s (Nicholas Hoult) perspective, the film is a take on Romeo a Julie where Juliet is alive and Romeo is a zombie.
Mrtvá nevěsta (2005)
Zombie romance meets Tim Burton’s distinctive stop-motion animation style in 2005’s Mrtvá nevěsta, where a betrothed Victorian-era man is pulled into the land of the dead by Emily, the titular corpse bride, who was murdered after eloping.
Zombies (2018)
Of course we had to include something for the little ones looking to get into the spooky spirit. Zombies is a Disney Channel Original Movie about a zombie football player and a human cheerleader who meet and fall in love, which leads to them trying to get their respective groups to coexist and get along as well. Like all good DCOMs, it has catchy songs, a positive message, and two sequels.
‘Shaun Of The Dead’ To ‘Train To Busan’: The Best Zombie Movies From Around The World
Zombies have long been an inspiration for some of the best scary movies, and the allure of the flesh-eating undead does not seem to perish with the theme remaining consistently popular around the world. While horror is the most prominent genre associated with these films, makers of some of the best zombie movies have explored comedy, romance and action as well.
How did zombie films find prominence in pop culture?
The concept of zombies can be traced to 16th and 17th-century Haitian history. It was believed that slaves who took their own life were made undead as a punishment. In a darker twist to this myth, Haitians believed that voodoo priests used these undead corpses for free labour.
Present-day modern zombie flicks are quite different from older flicks like Návrat oživlých mrtvol (1985) which started the trend of making such horror movies in this subgenre. The monsters shown in these films had all zombie-like traits but were simply referred to as human flesh-eaters.
The modern iterations typically show a post-apocalyptic version of reality that the masses find relatable, especially with real-world issues like the COVID-19 pandemic. Be it classics like Noc života Mrtví (1968) or cutting-edge action films like Úsvit mrtvých (2004), these movies have never failed to impress audiences.
Additionally, those who are not great fans of horror and gore but want to explore the zombie genre can always rely on zombie comedies like Soumrak mrtvých (2004) or the rib-tickling Japanese flick One Cut Of The Dead (2017). Meanwhile, fans of Korean zombie movies can watch Zombie On Sale (2019) directed by Lee Min-jae to kick-start the weekend with your brood.
