Movies about Wristwatch
Watches in movies have fascinated watch fans since collecting timepieces became (at least) as interesting as getting an autograph from your favorite actor. From Steve McQueen’s Monaco in Le Mans (1971), Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) Seiko Giugario in Cizinci (1986), Christian Bale’s Datejust in American Psycho (2000), Marlon Brando’s Rolex GMT and Martin Sheen’s Sheen’s Seiko 6105 “Captain Willard” in Apokalypsa Nyní (1979), to Casio’s CA53W on the wrist of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in Návrat do budoucnosti (1985), James Bond’s (Sean Connery) Submariner 6538 in Dr. No (1962), and many more, these pieces quite often became as famous (among collectors) as the movies they were in. In some cases, like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual in Doktor Strange (2016), Kate Becket’s (Stana Katic) Omega Speedmaster in the television series “Castle” (2009-2016), or the clock without hands in Ingmar Bergman’s Lesní jahody (1957), to name just a few, these pieces have even played a much more important role than simply being a prop. Time to look at some noteworthy appearances on the screen:
Pulp Fiction (1994):
“This watch was your birthright, […] so he hid it, in the one place he knew he could hide something.”
Tarantino’s masterpiece not only earned John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and Uma Thurman Academy Award nominations, it also featured a family heirloom with perhaps one of the most unusual stories, prizefighter Butch Coolidge’s (Bruce Willis) great grandfather’s gold watch (a Lancet trench watch). As we learn in Captain Koons’ (Christopher Walken) monologue, Orion Coolidge had initially bought the Lancet in a General Store in Knoxville at the turn of the century. When he was enlisted to serve in World War I, Orion gave the watch to his son Dane, who would later wear it as a soldier during World War II. At the Battle of Wake Island (December 8 – 23, 1941), Dane realized he might not make it home and gave it to an Air Force gunner named Winocki and asked to give it to his wife and his son (Butch’s father). He in turn was shot down over Hanoi during the Vietnam war and put in a prison camp, still wearing the gold watch. The only way he thought he could save it was to hide it from the Viet Cong in the last place you would want to wear a watch. Five years later, on his deathbed, he handed the watch over to his friend Koons (Christopher Walken) who also had to hide the watch in the same way to keep it safe until the day he could finally give it to Butch.
Christopher Nolan’s epic science fiction film wouldn’t be the same without Joseph Cooper’s (Matthew McConaughey) Hamilton Khaki Field wristwatch, perhaps the best product placement in the history of watch marketing: Shortly before he set off to leave earth (and our galaxy) as the pilot of the spaceship Endurance, Cooper gave the watch as a keepsake to his 10-year-old daughter “Murph” to compare their relative times for when he’d return. He later uses the watch from inside a massive tesseract to communicate with her across different time periods by manipulating the second hand of the wristwatch, using Morse code to transmit the quantum data collected from inside the event horizon, thus enabling humanity’s exodus and survival.
The watch became known by fans of the film as the “Murph” watch and was eventually released by Hamilton in 2019.
Ron Howard’s movie about the ill-fated Apollo 13 lunar mission is only one of the many must-see space movies with the Omega Speedmaster Professional in it. But since the watch was used by John Leonard “Jack“ Swigert, Jr. (played by Kevin Bacon in the movie) to time a 14-second maneuver that proved critical in returning the crew back to earth, this undoubtedly was one of the Speedmaster’s most important roles.
In Steven Spielberg’s classic shark movie, Richard Dreyfuss, playing Matt Hooper, wore a fairly regular dive watch that evolved into a frustrating mystery for the world’s watch nerds for decades. Until 2010, when Gary and Christian Stock were able to reveal that it was an Alsta Nautoscaph. The duo reached out to Dick Warlock, the stuntman who went into the cage with the shark in the water, and stunt coordinator Ted Grossman.
The seventeenth movie in the James Bond series, and the first to star Pierce Brosnan as the fictional MI6 officer James Bond, took product placement in the watch industry to a new level: In a time where people were still crazy about Swatch watches, Omega had pulled a badass marketing stunt and equipped Bond (originally a Rolex guy) with the Seamaster Professional 300 (loaded with gadgets like a laser and a remote detonator). The watch is not only a major plot device several times in the film; it created a tenfold increase in pieces sold for Omega, and helped introduce a new generation of buyers to the world of Swiss luxury watchmaking.
With an IMDB rating of only 5.9 and a critics consensus on Rotten Tomato that the movie “feels designed to annoy the audience into submission,” Denní světlo was certainly not Silvester Stallone’s greatest role. Nevertheless, Kit Latura’s (Stallone) performance in a tunnel connecting Manhattan and New Jersey brought the needed exposure for the Italian watch brand Panerai and led to significantly more demand (as well as more appearances in other action movies).
The American silent film starring Harold Lloyd (playing himself as a salesclerk at the De Vore Department Store) includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic to attract people to his employer’s store. A number of different buildings from 1st Street to 9th Street in downtown Los Angeles were used, with sets built on their roofs to match the facade of the main building, the International Bank Building at Temple and Spring Streets.
Matthew Vaughn’s hilarious movie about a spy organization and its latest recruit Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) fighting a global threat from a twisted tech genius also brought three Bremont watches to the big screen. Even more impressive, Bremont Co-Founder Nick English himself managed to make a cameo appearance as a Kingsman.
While obviously not a movie, the world’s first TV commercial still deserves to be on this list: It aired on July 1, 1941, on NBC’s WNBT-TV before the beginning of a baseball game in New York between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The ad was only 10 seconds long and cost the company $9 ($4 for airtime and $5 for “station charges”). Almost as impressive: In 1926, Bulova had broadcasted the first national radio commercial.
Špinavý trik tells the story of con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is working for FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) in 1978. Speaking of a con: Louis C.K.’s portrayal as FBI supervisor Stoddard Thorsen introduced viewers to a Rolex GMT-Master II in gold, more than two decades before this particular version of the watch was actually released by the Geneva-based brand.
Most Famous Watches in Movies

The watch on a man’s wrist can speak volumes about his personality, style, and taste. That’s why watches have always been an essential accessory for men.
On the big screen, they play a pivotal role in shaping the character’s persona. From Steve McQueen’s robust Monaco to James Bond’s sleek Omega, watches have become storytelling devices in movies. Sometimes they’re subtle, and sometimes they steal the scene.
Here’s our list of the most iconic watches in movies that have left a lasting impression on the audiences.

1. Rolex Submariner ref 6538 in Dr. No (1962)
When it comes to James Bond, most people think of Omega watches, given that Agent 007 has been wearing the brand for the past 28 years. However, Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, always put 007 in a “heavy Rolex Oyster”.
For the first James Bond movie, 1962’s Dr. Ne, they decided to honor this detail. As the first ever James Bond, Sean Connery wore the Rolex Submariner. This particular reference, 6538, eventually became known as the James Bond Submariner among watch circles.
As the secret agent needs to bounce from one environment to another seamlessly, a Rolex is the perfect tool at his wrist from the beach to a luxury dinner. While unlike other James Bond watches, this watch held no special powers or capabilities, this holds a special place as the original Bond watch. Sean Connery went on to wear this in his first four Bond movies. (photo: 007 on Instagram)

2. Porsche Design Orfina Chronograph in Top Gun (1986)
The Porsche Design Orfina Chronograph was introduced in 1972 and was the first PVD watch on the market. Fourteen years later, the pioneering blacked-out watch would feature prominently in Top Gun, which hit theaters in 1986.
Featured in the movie is the Valjoux 7750-powered piece, where it is seen in many close-up images. The PVD coating in black gave the watch a stealthy look and the chronograph was favored by pilots at the time for its durability and reliability.
Main character Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, was featured using the watch to time his takeoffs, landings, and other maneuvers as true pilots would have done. When the movie was remade in 2022 with Nejlepší zbraň: Maverick, Tom Cruise has the same watch on his wrist. (photo: 007 on Instagram)

3. TAG Heuer Monaco in Le Mans (1971)
Sometimes, it’s not the prop department that decides all the accessories for a character, but the actor himself. Racer and actor Steve McQueen chose the watch for pro racer Michael Delaney in the 1971 movie Le Mans and he chose TAG Heuer Monaco from the lineup of watches provided by the brand.
The reference 1133B featured in the film in 1971, when the company was still known as Jeuer. McQueen’s decision to wear it launched the model into popularity among watch enthusiasts. The square case, blue dial, and two-chronograph dial watch not only came from one of the racer’s sponsors but gave the character a sense of authenticity.
The Monaco also played a role in one of the film’s most famous scenes. In the scene, McQueen’s character is driving his Porsche 917K during the 24 hours of Le Mans race. The watch is prominently displayed on his wrist as he drives, and it helps add to the tension of the scene.
The watch worn by actor Steve McQueen in this movie is now considered one of the most iconic watches ever featured on film because of its sleek design and simple elegance — not to mention how well it fits into his character’s persona. Today, modern iterations of the famous timepiece remain in the TAG Heuer catalog.
4. Omega Seamaster 300M in GoldenEye (1995)
If you’re a fan of James Bond, then you’ll be familiar with the Omega Seamaster 300M watch that he wears in the 1995 film GoldenEye. Sitting snugly under his cuff, this signaled the change of Bond’s watch from Rolex to Omega.
In the film, Pierce Brosnan sported a quartz-powered Omega Seamaster 300m Professional (ref 2541.80). The emblematic timepiece is now world famous for its scalloped bezel, blue wave pattern dial, and skeleton hands.
The Seamaster 300M featured prominently in the film plot. It was equipped with a number of hidden features, including a laser, a compass, and a detonator. Bond used these features to help him complete his mission and defeat the film’s villain, Alec Trevelyan.
The Seamaster and Omega watches continued to appear in subsequent Bond films (the latest being Není čas umřít starring Daniel Craig) but this model holds a very special place as the watch that started it all for Omega and James Bond.

5. Rolex Datejust ref 16013 in American Psycho (2000)
Two-tone, steel and yellow gold watches were all the rage in the 1980s. Combining robust steel with luxurious gold, these watches became the quintessential symbol of success at the time.
This was also the time when Rolex rose to fame as an integral part of the executive style — it was almost a ritual for young professionals to get a Rolex when they made it to Wall Street, and part of that was its iconic appearance in the film Americký psychopat.
Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale, is an upwardly mobile young man in Wall Street who harms people in horrifying ways. As a wealthy investment banker, Bateman uses the Rolex as a symbol of his status and his desire to be truly accepted by the upper class.
Despite the despicable nature of his character, the Datejust ref 16013 that appeared on his wrist gained fans, and was instantly adopted by young professionals at the time.
While Rolex is mentioned 26 times in the novel that inspired the movie, the brand did not want any connection with the film, and was never mentioned, for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, it’s an example of excellent product placement.
6. Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in Apollo 13 (1995)
The Omega Speedmaster Professional “MoonWatch” is famously known as the first watch on the moon, having been worn by the astronauts during the first moon landing in 1969. You simply can’t make a movie about the Apollo missions without including an Omega Moonwatch.
Film Apollo 13 tells the story of an accident that happened during this mission, which caused problems with oxygen levels and water supplies onboard their spaceship called Columbia. One of the challenges faced by the crew required a precise timing of a fuel burn and Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) uses the Omega Speedmaster chronograph he was provided by NASA to do this. The Speedy served a life-saving role as it helped the crew return safely to Earth.
While the Omega Moonwatch was already incredibly popular thanks to its use on many lunar missions, the appearance of one on Tom Hanks’ wrist in Apollo 13 reached more people and added an incredible amount of authenticity to the character.
7. Panerai Luminor Pre Vendome in Denní světlo (1996)
The brand Panerai was brought out from obscurity in the luxury watch world when Sylvester Stallone decided to have Gabe Walker, in Daylight, wear a Panerai PAM5218-201/A in 1996. The brand has been supplying timepieces to the Royal Italian Navy since the early 1900s, but only became available to the public in 1993.
Like other brands, having a watch appear in a movie is a significant event when it comes to marketing.
A story that is always told was how Stallone discovered Panerai while filming in Denní světlo in Rome, but Panerai experts say he first saw the watch on a Montenegrin photographer named Monty Shadow, who was well-versed in luxury goods. No matter where Stallone discovered Panerai, it can’t be denied that he played a huge role in its success in Hollywood and in the mainstream.
The Panerai played a pivotal role in Denní světlo. Other than timing certain events, like a bomb detonation, the watch had a built-in compass that allowed Walker to find his way through the tunnels. These scenes also featured the luminescent dial, allowing him to track the time and direction in low-light conditions.
The Daylight watch helps Gabe Walker save the day and became a symbol of his strength, determination, and ability to overcome any obstacle. The Panerai watch, in this case, was perfectly cast in the film!
8. Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso in Temná rytířská trilogie (2005, 2008 a 2012)
Christian Bale has been truly lucky with the watches he has worn in film. Aside from his Rolex Datejust in Americký psychopat, he also famously wore two Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso watches as Batman in Temná rytířská trilogie.
The Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso is a watch that can be worn with the dial facing up or down. First produced in 1931, the Reverso was made for polo players, who needed the watch to be protected from shocks and dangers.
When it comes to iconic movie props you might think of Indiana Jones’ whip or James Bond’s Rolex, but the watch on Bruce Wayne’s wrist blends in so seamlessly to the character, it’s easy to miss. The understated refinement of the Reverso watches featured in these movies carries perfectly with the more sober and understated attire of Bruce Wayne compared to his Batman alter ego.
The best part is the flip-over case design. When the LeCoultre Reverso design was launched, it made the watch face capable of flipping towards the wrist to allow the caseback to give added protection during polo matches. What better subtle nod to Bruce Wayne’s alter ego than a watch face that conceals itself?
Bale wore a Jaeger LeCoultre (JLC) Reverso Grande Taille for the first two installments of the trilogy, and a JLC Grande Date, for the final movie.
9. Hamilton Ventura in Men In Black (1997)
There’s no better watch case to feature in a movie about secret agents battling aliens than the Hamilton Ventura. Hamilton Ventura has been the official watch for the Muži v černém franchise since its first appearance in 1997.
Several models feature throughout the films but it’s the Chrono Quartz that takes a starring role in the first film. In a scene where the two main agents, K and J (played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith), are following clues to a mysterious locker, they find a community of tiny aliens that built their religion and world around two items Agent K left them to safeguard — a watch and an old video store card. Not only is the wristwatch a clue in the movie, but Agent J relinquishes his own watch, a Hamilton Ventura, to ease the suffering of this alien colony at the loss of their sacred monument.
The watches featured in these films have extra features (as most secret agent watches do) that include a laser, a compass, and a detonator.
10. TAG Heuer 1000 in Vlk z Wall Street (2013)
Leonardo DiCaprio is perfectly cast in the biopic and black comedy Vlk z Wall Street. He plays Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker that makes a fortune by defrauding his clients. The true to life film shows the outcome of greed and materialism – and having the main character wear a luxury watch was in order.
In one of the most famous scenes from the film, DiCaprio’s character is shown launching a watch into a crowd after claiming it’s worth $40,000. At first glance, the watch might look like a Rolex GMT-Master in yellow gold, but the actual timepiece he wore was a TAG Heuer Professional 1000.
While it looks like a Rolex, as the character Belfort tries to imply, it’s only gold plated and has a quartz movement. DiCaprio, being a brand ambassador for TAG Heuer, compromised with the costume department to bring in a watch that only looks like a flashy Rolex.
Most Famous Watches in Movies: Final Thoughts
There are many more iconic watches in movies, but these ten are probably the most memorable. Not only do they represent some of the best movie moments and scenes ever made, they also show the power a watch has in shaping one’s personal style and taste.

The Most Famous and Iconic Movie Watches of All Time (That You Might Have Missed)
Watches featured in films aren’t just handsome accessories; they tie into the storyline and add depth to characters. Back in the olden days, watches featured in the movies often became incidental icons – the right watch being strapped to the right (handsome) wrist. Later on, the watches in films became well-placed product placements orchestrated by the studio. But no matter how they got there, some of the luxury watches that have graced the wrists of Hollywood’s biggest actors have become stars in their own right.
The silver screen is the world’s best billboard. Not only do you have the visual aspect, but you also have time to explain a product, associate it with a desirable movie star, and even (in some cases) give it a distinct character that audiences will forever associate with that timepiece. So much can be said about a character through their choice (or anti-choice) of wristwear. Throughout the ages of cinema, many characters have sported watches and fashions that have experienced unprecedented success or longevity as a result. Astute product placement can make a brand a lot of money, but more emotively affect our cultural backdrop in a real and tangible way.
What we particularly love about luxury watches on the silver screen is the awe they inspire. Avid collectors love rewinding to the past and seeing these beautiful (now vintage) – pieces. Often, these watches even inspired an entire generation to get into collecting. So here, we rounded up some of the most iconic movie watches that you might have missed.
American Psycho (2000) — Rolex Datejust Two-Tone
– Movie: American Psycho
– Actor: Christian Bale
– Character: Patrick Bateman
– Movie Date: 2000
– Watch: Rolex Datejust
American Psycho’s protagonist Patrick Bateman has become an unlikely pop-culture icon. Despite being a psychotic killer, Christian Bale’s character is stylish and well-groomed. So, it’s not a surprise that movie-goers paid special attention to his watch, a two-tone 36mm Rolex Datejust reference 16013 with a Jubilee bracelet and tapestry dial in the film.
The story unfolds in New York during the 1980s when two-tone watches, forged out of stainless steel and gold, were incredibly popular. Since its release in 2000, American Psycho has become a true cult-classic. So much so, that the Rolex watch worn by Bateman is to this day known as the “American Psycho Rolex” among many collectors.
Apollo 13 (1995) — Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
– Movie: Apollo 13
– Actor: Tom Hanks
– Character: Jim lovell
– Movie Date: 1995
– Watch: Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
Okay, this was an obvious choice, but still, not one that should be forgotten! In the Apollo 13 movie, Tom Hanks wears an Omega Speedmaster – the official watch certified for space flight by NASA. When Apollo 13 went into space, this is the watch that the astronauts actually wore, including NASA’s Gemini 4 mission and the historic moon landing.
The Omega Speedmaster is easily one of the world’s most famous and iconic timepieces. Seeing it on the silver screen just cements its status – especially because it was on Tom Hanks’ wrist during this famous Hollywood film.
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) — Rolex Day-Date “President”
– Movie: Glengarry Glen Ross
– Actor: Alec Baldwin
– Character: Blake
– Movie Date: 1992
– Watch: Rolex Day-Date President
“You see this watch? You see this watch? … That watch cost more than your car. I made $970,000 last year. How much did you make? You see, pal, that’s who I am. And you’re nothing.”
This watch only made a cameo in the famous film Glengarry Glen Ross. But today, we’re still talking about it. Alec Baldwin, who plays an outside exec “from downtown,” delivers these cutting words and flashes this famous yellow gold Rolex Day-Date and it immediately goes down in movie history. This watch was already famous for being worn by world leaders, dignitaries, and celebrities – the movie plug was really just a boost for this iconic gold Rolex watch.
Money Monster (2016) — Omega Speedmaster Professional 18k Gold
– Movie: Peníze Monster
– Actor: George Clooney
– Character: Lee Gates
– Movie Date: 2016
– Watch: Omega Speedmaster Professional 18k Gold
This is a sneaky good movie with an even better luxury watch lurking on the wrist of the debonair Mr. Clooney. George Clooney plays the difficult role of Lee Gates with aplomb, but the wordless performance of his solid yellow gold Omega Speedmaster Professional is truly sensational.
The premise of Money Monster is scary. A disgruntled investor goes berserk and overtakes a game show while it is being broadcast live on TV. The show’s host? None other than George Clooney. His character, Lee Gates, is taken hostage along with his tantalizing ticker. To find out his (and its) fate, you’ll have to watch the film.
Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) — Rolex Datejust 36
– Movie: Vlk z Wall Street
– Actor: Matthew McConaughey
– Character: Mark Hanna
– Movie Date: 2013
– Watch: Rolex Datejust
Matthew McConaughey plays the uproarious Mark Hanna in this 2013 classic. Hanna is a perfectly played paradigm of the era. A genius of sorts, his methods and practices are…unconventional, to say the least. These men featured in the film were very much wolves in many senses of the word. You kind of needed to be a bit wild to survive in that dog-eat-dog environment.
The Rolex Datejust is a flawless badge of power but it can also double as a disguise to the rest of the world for characters like Mark Hanna. A luxury watch and a smart suit can go a long way towards earning somebody’s trust. One of the smartest investments he ever made…
Lucy in the Sky (2019) — Omega Speedmaster X-33
– Movie: Lucy na obloze
– Actor: Natalie Portman
– Character: Lucy Cola
– Movie Date: 2019
– Watch: Omega Speedmaster X-33
We’re ending this list with a real curveball. Few people doubt Natalie Portman’s ability to play any role sent her way, but her performance as astronaut Lucy Cola is really something. The Oscar winner shines in the role, as does the unusual-yet-authentic Omega Speedmaster X-33 in titanium that calls her wrist home.
The film is a really compelling exploration of an astronaut’s mental state, having done and seen so much more than many mere mortals can ever comprehend. Perhaps that explains her somewhat oddball choice, although this unusual analog/digital hybrid quartz timepiece really is the model that astronauts wear due to the high degree of functionality that it offers. While it is far less recognizable than the classic Speedmaster Moonwatch, the X-33’s appearance in the film is highly accurate and only furthers the realism of this must-watch movie.
