YouTube has been a one stop shop for cute animal videos and Byzantine video essays since 2005. But in recent years, this gargantuan media hub has more to offer than snack-sized bites of digital entertainment. In fact, you can now watch entire films on the platform for free (with ads, of course), making for a great way to dabble in streaming without paying subscription fees.
There are plenty of options to choose from, but which ones are worth your time? To help you out, EW has rounded up the 12 best movies on YouTube right now.
Barry Lyndon (1975)
This odyssey of an average man who just keeps failing upward and his subsequent fall from grace may seem like your standard period piece, but, despite its predictably lavish visuals, Barry Lyndon is far from it. That’s because it was directed by Stanley Kubrick, who tells the story of the title character (played with aloof detachment by Ryan O’Neal) with an innate sense of irony as we track his journey from farm boy to soldier to aristocrat. Featuring some of the most gorgeous cinematography ever captured on film, Barry Lyndon is the work of a master at the top of his craft, with EW’s critic calling it «a brocade-and-powdered-wig period piece so unprecedented in its authenticity that it would seem as enigmatic — and compelling — to modern audiences as a visit to another galaxy.» —Kevin Jacobsen

Hrají: Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee, Hardy Kruger, Diana Körner, Gay Hamilton
Big Fish (2003)
A son tries to cope with the impending death of his father in this earnest, fantastical tale from director Tim Burton. The dying Edward (Albert Finney) recounts his colorful life story to his son, Will (Billy Crudup), involving a witch, a giant, a werewolf, conjoined twins, and more who crossed paths with Edward in his youth. Will, long been suspicious of his father’s whimsical stories, inevitably comes to appreciate his lust for life as he approaches the end. But the appeal of Big Fish is just how thoroughly Burton invests you in Edward’s tall tales, told through visually striking flashbacks. As EW’s critic noted, «Big Fish turns into a wide-eyed Southern gothic picaresque in which each lunatic twist of a development is more enchanting than the last.» —KJ

Bye Bye Birdie (1963)
Of all the stage productions that have permeated through pop culture, few are as charming as Bye Bye Birdie. While Elvis doesn’t star in the movie version, the premise was inspired by The King getting drafted at the height of his fame. Our fictional singing heartthrob also gets scouted by the Army, but his real battle is closer to home as he deals with everything from adoring teenage fans to a bizarre scheme by Dick Van Dyke’s character (an aspiring songwriter who sees the singer as his own personal meal ticket). Ultimately, this musical is full of catchy tunes, great 1960s flashbacks, and a standout performance from Van Dyke in his very first film role. —Chris Snellgrove
Ředitel školy: George Sidney
Hrají: Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret, Maureen Stapleton, Bobby Rydell, Jesse Pearson, Ed Sullivan
Grand Hotel Budapest (2014)
Grand Hotel Budapest is one of Wes Anderson’s most successful films at blending his signature style with genuine substance. Bursting with madcap energy and gorgeous pastel visuals, the film takes place in the 1930s in a fictional European country on the brink of fascism, where hotel concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) is framed for the murder of a wealthy dowager. Joined by loyal lobby boy Zero (Tony Revolori), he tries to evade capture against the backdrop of an increasingly dangerous country on the cusp of war. Operating at the top of his game, Anderson crafts a humorous feast for the eyes, with another smartly assembled cast led by Fiennes in one of his best performances. As EW’s critic wrote, Grand Hotel Budapest is «a marvelous contraption, a wheels-within-wheels thriller that’s pure oxygenated movie play.» It’s also by far Anderson’s most successful film at the Oscars to date, scoring nine nominations and four wins. —KJ

Hoop Dreams (1994)
Hoop Dreams is among the most celebrated sports documentaries — and documentaries in general. The film was filmed over five years and captures the profoundly human story of two Black high schoolers with ambitions to one day join the NBA. Even if you think a story of human achievement overcoming adversity is overdone, that’s arguably because this 1994 masterpiece was a slam-dunk decades prior. To quote EW’s critic, this «epic» movie is «a discursive, almost novelistic tapestry of cinema verite and talking-head interviews.» Even if you’ve never so much as picked up a basketball, it’s impossible to watch this film and not get drawn into the player’s hopes, even as the bleak reality keeps threatening to claw their chances away. —CS

Jimmy Neutron: Chlapec Genius (2001)
Before the animated Nickelodeon series that aired from 2002 to 2006, the world was introduced to boy genius Jimmy Neutron in the form of this well-received 2001 film. Despite being only 11 years old, young Jimmy Neutron is highly advanced for his age, though lacking in the social department. All the drama that comes with middle school is forgotten, though, when various parents in his hometown of Retroville are abducted by aliens. It’s then up to the children, led by Jimmy Neutron, to find a way to get them back. Jimmy Neutron: Chlapec Genius was a critics and audience favorite upon its release, with EW’s critic calling it, «a lickety-split, madly packed, roller-coaster entertainment that might almost have been designed to make you scared of how much smarter your kids are than you.» The film was one of the three nominees for the first-ever Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars, alongside Monsters, Inc. a Šrek. —KJ

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
When it comes to horror films, there are guilty pleasures, and then there’s Killer Klowns from Outer Space, a movie whose gonzo premise is built directly into the title. It stars Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, and John Allen Nelson as horndog youngsters destined to tangle with the titular space baddies. But the real star of the show is John Vernon, turning in his most memorable performance this side of Animal House. Ultimately, how much you enjoy this movie hinges on what flavor of horror you like. As EW’s writer pointed out, it boasts an «anemic plot» that nonetheless provides «winking violence» and «bona fide creep-outs» via «fanged clowns, deadly shadow puppets, and bloody greasepaint that recalls Dr. Seuss by way of The Evil mrtvý.» In other words, it’s vintage shlock of the highest fashion — and a perfect film to stream when you’re craving something camp. —CS

LA Confidential (1997)
Like the best crime novels, LA Confidential unfurls like a yarn as it depicts a crime-riddled Los Angeles in the 1950s. This neo-noir favorite tells the intricate story of detectives whose investigation into a robbery and homicide at a coffee shop leads to revelation after revelation of the corruption that interconnects the self-proclaimed City of Angels. Featuring an all-star cast including Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe in breakout roles and Kim Basinger, who won an Oscar for her performance as a sex worker/Veronica Lake lookalike, LA Confidential crackles with style and well-earned plot twists. «Like Čínská čtvrť, the 1974 classic of Los Angeles depravity,» wrote EW’s critic, «this is the rare night-world thriller that understands what bad impulses can do to good men. Even the heroes have to get down in the muck to take on the devil.» —KJ

Malé ženy (1994)
While Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic may be more front of mind nowadays, let’s not forget this cozy Gillian Armstrong version featuring some of the brightest young stars of the ’90s. Winona Ryder earned an Oscar nomination for her high-spirited performance as Jo March, who grows up in 19th-century New England with her sisters, Meg (Trini Alvarado), Beth (Claire Danes), and Amy (Kirsten Dunst, later Samantha Mathis). As the sisters come of age, they realize what (and who) they want out of life, with help from their self-sacrificing mother, «Marmee» (Susan Sarandon). This version of Malé ženy keeps the warmth of Alcott’s original story told in a faithfully straightforward manner, with EW’s critic calling it, «a graceful, unsentimental, well-made movie.» Plus, it has Christian Bale as Laurie! What more could a March sister (or we) want? —KJ

Pi (1998)
Pi is a mind-boggling study in contrasts: It’s a math movie for people who hate math, and we’d argue it’s a Darren Aronofsky movie (his debut!) for people who can’t stomach the director’s later works (see: Requiem For a Dream, Mother, et al.). Even if picking up a calculator makes you nervous, this tale of a mathematician trying to figure out what makes the world tick through the power of numbers is wildly captivating. The cast does a serviceable job, but the real strengths of this film are its big swings to connect calculations with the central mysteries of religion, the universe, and everything in between. It’s simultaneously abstract and concretely effective, with EW’s critic highlighting how, «the film has been shot and edited with hallucinatory finesse, and its freakazoid intensity gets to you.» —CS

Čerpací žehlička (1977)
If you’ve ever enjoyed an Arnold Schwarzenegger action film, then you ought to watch the documentary that effectively kick-started his career. While Čerpací žehlička is about bodybuilders in general, our eyes are drawn to the soon-to-be star in his physical prime, reminding us why he was perfectly cast as Conan the Barbarian back in the ’80s. As EW’s writer pointed out in a retrospective on the actor, «Schwarzenegger’s charm and wit were immediately apparent,» and it’s hard not to laugh at his hilarious and even vulgar descriptions of the sport (likening it to sexual intercourse, among other things). —CS
Ředitel školy: George Butler, Robert Fiore
Hrají: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Mike Katz, Franco Columbu, Ed Corney, Ken Waller, Serge Nubret
Stargate (1994)
For sci-fi fans, it’s almost quaint to remember a time when the Stargate franchise was limited to this single film. Still, it’s worth rewatching the movie that eventually spawned a television empire led by Stargate SG-1. This early narrative of Earthlings traveling through a gate to the other side of the universe and discovering the extent to which our planet was manipulated by aliens still feels remarkably fresh. Much of that is due to the strong performances: Kurt Russell is all lantern-jawed heroism, while James Spader plays against type as a nerdy scientist who just might be out of his depth. As EW’s critic pointed out, the film has interesting «notions about the dawn of civilization» as well as «flashes of psychedelic visual energy.» Big ideas combined with a killer aesthetic… what’s not to love? —CS

Hrají: Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors

There are plenty of titles worth checking out on the service, but we’ve selected three that are particularly great. From a recent Oscar juggernaut to one of the funniest heist movies ever made, these are three movies you should definitely watch on New Year’s Day.
- 5 filmů opouštějících Prime Video v lednu, které musíte vidět
- 3 dramata na Prime Video, která musíte vidět v lednu
- 3 TV comedies on Prime Video you need to watch in January
Všechno a všude všechno najednou (2022)
Všechno všude najednou | Oficiální trailer HD | A24
If you haven’t caught up with 2022’s Best Picture winner yet, New Year’s Day might be the perfect excuse to catch up with this movie and kick off the new year on the right foot. Všechno a všude najednou tells the story of a laundromat owner who becomes ensnared in a multiversal battle for the fate of the universe and, most importantly, realizes how beautiful her simple, stressful life is.
Featuring the kind of raw imagination that few movies even attempt, Vše Všude is a hilarious comedy, a riveting drama, and a great action movie all rolled into one package. Add in wonderful central performances from Stephanie Hsu, Ke-Huy Quan, and especially Michelle Yeoh, and you’ve got a recipe for one of the best Best Picture winners in recent memory.
památka (2001)
Memento (2000) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers
Christopher Nolan fully announced that he would be a director to watch with 2001’s Memento, which contains the seeds of much of what the director would eventually be fascinated with over the course of his career. Telling the story of a man with short-term memory loss who wants desperately to find the man who killed his wife, Memento tells its story both backward and forward in time, with the two timelines converging in the center of the narrative.
All of that may sound like the recipe for an insanely convoluted story, but Memento always feels crystal clear. That clear narrative throughline makes Memento work and signals what a great director Nolan would eventually become with movies like Temný rytíř a Oppenheimer.
Ryba jménem Wanda (1988)
Ryba jménem Wanda (1988) | Oficiální trailer | Studia MGM
A crime comedy the likes of which we simply don’t get anymore, Fish Called Wanda tells the story of a diamond heist gone wrong and the aftermath of that messy heist. The brilliance of the movie, though, is that it makes almost no attempt to take its central criminals seriously.
Instead, it gives each member of its cast a chance to show what they’re truly made of by putting them in a series of increasingly farcical situations, including one running bit in which a man tries desperately to kill an old woman who witnessed the heist and fails in increasingly convoluted ways. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his performance here, and he’s far from the only member of this ensemble cast who is doing Oscar-worthy work.
