Movies about War hero
The sacrifices we celebrate on holidays like Memorial Day have become increasingly incomprehensible in the secular West. Why would anyone sacrifice his life for something beyond himself? It makes little sense if death is final and absolute. In a materialist world, to die is naturally feared above all things, and anything mortally risky—however chivalrous or dutiful—is deemed foolish.
Honoring sacrifice dělá makes sense in the context of belief in eternal life, however. If we believe the creedal words “I am not my own” and that there is life beyond this life, then what is it to die? To be cut down in the prime of life in service of some cause (even a questionable cause) may still be undesirable, but it becomes more tolerable, or even honorable.
Humans can suppress, but never quite escape, our God-given knowledge that there’s something more than this life. Perhaps that’s why mainstream audiences are so stirred by war movies that depict soldiers in the line of duty, willing to courageously pay the ultimate price. They capture the beautiful valor and “into the fray” grit that comes more naturally when we anchor our lives in truths and hopes beyond this world.
To that end, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite war films released in the last 50 years. I’ve listed the movies below—which represent nine different wars—in chronological order of when the events they depict took place. Though my selections are no doubt informed by my American nationality, the themes they explore are universal and needn’t be viewed only through a patriotic lens. Pick a few you haven’t seen and add them to your viewing queue. Enjoy!
Poslední mohykán (French and Indian War)
Michael Mann’s 1992 epic, loosely based on James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, may be melodramatic at times, but it’s the sort of sweeping wartime romance Hollywood doesn’t make anymore. Visually and musically stunning, and unabashedly chivalric, Poslední of the Mohicans may be one of the last of its kind. Available to rent. Ohodnoceno R.
Master and Commander: Odvrácená strana světa (Napoleonic Wars)
Peter Weir’s 2003 adaptation of Patrick O’Brian’s novel ranks in my top 10 all-time favorite films. It has everything: battle action, intimate character development, tragic loss, beautiful cinematography, and epic incorporation of classical music from the likes of Mozart, Bach, and Vaughan Williams. Sledujte na Tubi. Hodnoceno PG-13.
Jízda s ďáblem (Americká občanská válka)
Ang Lee’s 1999 film, adapted from the novel Běda žít dál, explores a neglected front of the Civil War: the Kansas-Missouri border war. Interesting as a historical narrative—with one big action showpiece, Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence—the film also handles explorations of morality, duty, and race with nuance and dimension uncommon in the genre. Available to rent. Ohodnoceno R.
Sláva (Americká občanská válka)
This powerful 1989 movie, directed by Edward Zwick, tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the earliest African American regiments in the Union Army. Featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Denzel Washington, the movie is a crucial addition to the canon of Civil War cinema. Sledujte na Hulu. Ohodnoceno R.
Gallipoli (První světová válka)
The second Peter Weir film on this list, Gallipoli (1981) stars a young Mel Gibson as a soldier in the Australian army who, along with his friend Archy (Mark Lee), takes part in the Gallipoli campaign. The film explores themes of friendship, sacrifice, loss of innocence, and Australian identity. Watch on Kanopy or pronajmout. Hodnoceno PG.
1917 (První světová válka)
Unfolding in one highly engrossing, two-hour continuous shot, this brilliant film from Sam Mendes isn’t just a showy technical feat—it’s also a film that captures the beauty of duty and simple obedience, “of saying ‘yes’ to something costly and hard, simply because an authority above you gives the order.” Available to rent. Ohodnoceno R.
Celý klid na západní frontě (První světová válka)
This 2022 Oscar-winning German film adapts Erich Remarque’s classic novel for the Netflix generation. In some ways this is a shame, because a smartphone-size screen is no place for the painterly beauty and visceral power of such a cinematic (if excessively violent) epic. Sledujte Netflix. Ohodnoceno R.
Dunkirk (Druhá světová válka)
Christopher Nolan’s trademark editing style (cross-cutting, time-manipulation, and ever-more-tightly spiraling narrative threads) is deployed to magnificent effect in this rousing British epic about Operation Dynamo. Among its many merits, the 2017 film viscerally captures the beauty of unmerited grace and boasts an incredibly memorable—and effective—score by Hans Zimmer. Sledujte na Hulu. Hodnoceno PG-13.
Tenká červená linie (Druhá světová válka)
Either my #1 or #2 film of all time, Terrence Malick’s 1998 epic marked his return to filmmaking after a 20-year absence (and starred pretty much every buzzy actor of the late ’90s). Ostensibly an adaptation of James Jones’s 1962 novel about Guadalcanal, the gorgeous-in-every-way masterpiece is actually a spiritual tone poem about the problem of evil, the tragic consequences of sin, and paradise lost. Sledujte na Hulu. Ohodnoceno R.
Zachraňte vojína Ryana (Druhá světová válka)
Released the same year (1998) as Tenká červená linie, Steven Spielberg’s triumph has become the definitive cinematic portrayal of D-Day, as well as a genuinely moving (and deeply theological) narrative of soldierly duty, sacrifice, and the illogical arithmetic of grace. Sledujte na Paramount+. Ohodnoceno R.
Vlajky našich otců a Dopisy z Iwo Jima (Druhá světová válka)
Clint Eastwood’s two-film cinematic diptych examines the Battle of Iwo Jima from both the American soldier’s perspective (Vlajky) and the Japanese soldier’s perspective (Dopisy). The concept of this multiperspective approach is brilliant enough, but the films themselves are also exceptionally good. Watch them both over the course of a weekend. Available to rent. Rated R.
Píseň hřebenu (Druhá světová válka)
Mel Gibson’s 2016 film tells the inspiring story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a pacifist combat medic whose heroism in the Battle of Okinawa led to him becoming the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Though brutally violent, the film is thoughtful in its wrestling with the intersection of Christian religion, war, and sacrifice. Sledujte na Hulu. Ohodnoceno R.
Oddanost (korejská válka)
The most recent film on this list, 2022’s Oddanost vychází z knihy Oddanost: Epický příběh o hrdinství, přátelství a oběti. The refreshingly virtuous film tells the true story of the first African American naval aviator Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and his heroic actions in the Korean War. Sledujte na Paramount+. Hodnoceno PG-13.
Rescue Dawn (Vietnamská válka)
Werner Herzog’s 2006 film tells the story of Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale), the German-American pilot who was the first—and only—American POW to successfully escape from a Laotian prison camp during the Vietnam conflict. But in Herzog’s quirky hands (see Grizzly Man, for example), the film is more than just straightforward history. It’s a fascinating character study and reflection on humanity in harrowing circumstances. Sledujte na Tubi. Hodnoceno PG-13.
Byli jsme vojáci (Vietnamská válka)
In contrast to most Vietnam War movies, which lean toward cynicism and nihilism, Byli jsme vojáci (2002)—directed by Christian filmmaker Randall Wallace—highlights the honor, loyalty, and brotherhood of soldiers, even in a gritty and often senseless war. Podívejte se na Prime Video. Ohodnoceno R.
Apokalypsa Nyní (Vietnamská válka)
Loosely inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Srdce temnoty, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 epic will likely forever be considered cinema’s definitive interpretation of the Vietnam War. The film’s use of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” is among the most memorable deployments of classical music in a movie. K dispozici ke koupi. Ohodnoceno R.
Forrest Gump (Vietnamská válka)
Robert Zemeckis’s Oscar-winning 1994 film isn’t really a Vietnam film. But the controversial war—and the countercultural foment it inspired—figure prominently in the life of Tom Hanks’s iconic character. Gump’s heroic actions in Vietnam alter the course of his life (and that of Gary Sinise’s Lieutenant Dan) forever. Podívejte se na Prime Video. Hodnoceno PG-13.
Black Hawk Down (Somali Civil War)
Ridley Scott brings his gifted action direction to this 2002 film about a bloody but little-remembered fight that claimed the lives of 18 U.S. service members in Mogadishu. Starring a who’s who of aughts-era male actors, the immersive, stressful film struck a chord with audiences when it was released mere months after 9/11. Sledujte Netflix. Ohodnoceno R.
Spojené 93 (Válka proti terorismu)
The valiant fighters on this flight on September 11, 2001—arguably the first fight in the 21st-century war on terror—weren’t military combatants. They were citizen soldiers. They weren’t expecting to fight to the death in the skies above Pennsylvania on that Tuesday morning, but they did. And Paul Greengrass’s pulsating chronicle of it is heart-pounding in the best sense. Available to rent. Ohodnoceno R.
Hurt Locker (válka v Iráku)
Set in the second year of the Iraq War, Kathryn Bigelow’s best picture–winning 2008 film is one of the most intense on this list. The heroes of this story have a white-knuckle task: find and destroy improvised explosive devices before they reap carnage and death. Available to rent. Ohodnoceno R.
Zero Tmavě Třicet (Válka proti terorismu)
Kathryn Bigelow followed Hurt Locker’s success with this 2012 thriller about the decade-long hunt for, and ultimate killing of, Osama bin Laden. For a generation shaped by the trauma of 9/11, the news we received on May 1, 2011, was cathartic—and so is this film. Sledujte na Hulu. Ohodnoceno R.

War is hell. It’s brutal and bloody. It destroys lives, countries, cultures. It shapes our past, our present, our future. And that is why it continues to be the fascination of filmmakers and movie-goers alike. Stories about war reveal the true nature of humanity in its darkest times.
And just because these are dramas often dealing with the military—telling stories of brave soldiers and great victories—these aren’t always flag-waving patriotic films. A war movie can be deeply pacifist, it can be revolutionary, it can be critical of our leaders who bring us into conflict.
Below we run down the 20 greatest war movies ever made. It includes some of the classics along with a few non-traditional choices to widen your expectations of what a war movie can be and do.
Honorable Mention: Captain America
Yes, it borders on the line of Marvel-induced jingoism and it’s a superhero movie that surely doesn’t shine a light on the throes of war like the rest of this list (which is why it’s an HM, not an actual entry). But Kapitán Amerika, in a lot of ways, encapsulates who we umět be and what, ultimately, we hope to ne have to be at the same time. It’s still one of Marvel’s greatest outings, and man if ol’ Cap isn’t a great hero to rally around.
8 Amazing War Films Based On True Stories
If you are new to the LOWA Military Boots blog, it’s important to know that we live and breathe anything to do with the military. From military podcasts to reflective war films, we’re huge fans of anything that showcases the resilience of our servicemen and women and allows us to reflect on the past. There are so many films that we could recommend when it comes to the latter, but it’s the amazing war films based on true stories that stand out.
War films based on true stories have a special power to give us a glimpse into some of the most important moments in military history and capture the true spirit and bravery of the individuals who lived through them. Let’s explore eight of the very best war films based on true stories that leave us feeling contemplative, inspired and wowed by military history.
Oppenheimer (2023)
The first film on our list of amazing war films based on true stories is also the newest. Directed by Christopher Nolan and released in July 2023 to an overwhelmingly positive critical reception, Oppenheimer is a 3-hour triumph that delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist pivotal in the creation of nuclear weapons during World War Two. Though the film focuses less on the frontline events of World War Two and more on the role of everyone behind-the-scenes, Oppenheimer is an utterly gripping character study and a film that goes deep into the psyche of one of the most important but destructive minds in military history.
Dunkerque (2017)
Christopher Nolan’s military fascination began long before Oppenheimer as he is also the director of the next film on our list of war films based on true stories. While the characters in this film are not explicitly based on real people, Dunkirk brings to life the extraordinary and true evacuation of British and Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during World War Two. If you’re looking for a war film that really captures the essence and horrors of war, this one is it. Dunkirk has an innovative approach to time that weaves different narratives and perspectives together to create an intensity that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
Ukládání soukromého Ryana (1998)
Often billed as the most realistic depiction of the Second World War, Saving Private Ryan is arguably one of the best-known war films based on true stories. Directed by the fantastic Steven Spielberg and starring the wonderful Tom Hanks, this war film opens with a spine-tingling and harrowing glimpse at the D-Day invasion and the pace rarely lets up in the scenes that follow. The theme of camaraderie runs through the whole film, resulting in a truly reflective and emotional depiction of one of the pivotal moments in global history.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Continuing with our World War Two theme, Hacksaw Ridge tells the incredible story of combat medic Desmond Doss. Andrew Garfield was deservedly nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his depiction of Doss, with his powerful performance highlighting individual brilliance in the most dire and challenging circumstances. Providing a study of courage and respect, make sure Hacksaw Ridge is right at the top of your watchlist!
Četa (1986)
Oliver Stone’s Platoon won Best Picture at the 59th Academy Awards and it’s not difficult to see why. Platoon portrays the Vietnam War in an authentic and raw manner, following a young soldier who struggles to get to grips with the moral complexities of the war. The key theme of the movie is the struggle between wrong and right, one that runs through so many key events in military history and rarely has a firm conclusion. Platoon is actually the first film in a trilogy, and although the following two films were less critically acclaimed, there’s plenty more to get stuck into if you enjoy this war film.
Černý jestřáb sestřelen (2001)
One of the best things about war films based on true stories is that they allow us to take a closer look at battles and operations that may rarely leave the history books. This is the case for Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, an enthralling depiction of the Battle of Mogadishu. The film focuses on this US military operation in Somalia and explores how war has an impact on both military personnel and civilians caught in the crossfire. Black Hawk Down is certainly a very reflective film and one that reminds us of the need for courage and determination when faced with adversity.
Velký útěk (1963)
The Great Escape has real classic status amongst film buffs. Again set in World War Two, the film is based on the mind blowing true story of a mass escape from a German prisoner-of-war camp. Director John Sturges delves right into the intricate planning and execution of the escape by Allied prisoners of war, with a cast that includes Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough. The overall message is one of celebration and triumph, as the film highlights the determination of those who risked their lives for freedom.
Tenká červená čára (1998)
Last but not least, make sure you check out The Thin Red Line when hunting for war films based on true stories. The Thin Red Line is an artistic and intricate study of the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War Two and offers a truly philosophical approach to war. Sean Penn and George Clooney are just two of the many names that deliver poignant performances that highlight the real emotions and struggles of military personnel. Watching The Thin Red Line in the present day is a timely reminder of the sacrifices that have been made throughout military history, and firmly highlights how the emotional impact of such sacrifices extends well beyond the screen.
