Vždycky jsem říkal, že když budu mít děti, přiměju je na střední nebo vysokou školu zaměstnávat ve dvou odvětvích: v maloobchodě a v restauraci. Vaše uznání za tvrdou, často nevděčnou práci, kterou tito lidé vykonávají – a vaše zacházení s nimi – se poté drasticky a exponenciálně změní. Mohu slíbit, že pokud budete u stolů čekat třeba i týden, už nikdy nenecháte na účtu nic menšího než 20 procent spropitného. pokud vaše služba nebyla skutečně odporná.
A i když ne všechno BOH (zadní část domu nebo kuchyně a další prostory, které veřejnost obecně nevidí) jsou vždy stejně plné hněvu a zoufalství (nebo ochlupení na ohanbí, když na to přijde), jako ve filmech jako Čekání věřili byste, že v tom filmu jsou velká zrnka pravdy, díky kterým je tragicko-komicky příbuzný: Nekonečné vlny zákazníků se stížnostmi nebo osobními problémy, nad kterými nemáte kontrolu, syndrom malého tyrana, kterým trpí mnoho generálních ředitelů restaurací, občasné naprosté nepochopení mezi kuchyní a číšníkem a naopak, ten příšerně zničující pocit, když vidíš, že u stolu jsi buď bez spropitného, nebo — což je horší — surově urážlivý. 4. Amelie

2. Office Space
Ačkoli se velká část této kultovní klasiky od texaského režiséra Mika Judge odehrávala v pekle kóje, významná a nezapomenutelná hrstka scén se odehrála v Chotchkieho, restauraci ve stylu TGI Friday’s na ulici od kanceláře hlavních postav. Také to samo o sobě zavedlo frázi „kusy vkusu“ do amerického povědomí a poskytlo nám jedinou další velkou filmovou roli Jennifer Aniston kromě Good Girl, za což je třeba vždy chválit.

Zatímco dodávka klasické řady, «Vítejte v Thunderdome, děvko!» mohlo to být jediné slušné dílo Dane Cooka v kině, je to jen jeden z mnoha magických doteků Čekání, film, který udělal pro odvětví služeb co Animal House dělal pro bratrské domy a Caddyshack dělal pro golfová hřiště. It’s surprising that more movies don’t understand the true grueling and passionate work that goes into a restaurant, considering so many writers spend their time waiting tables before their big break. Here are some movies and TV shows that nail some aspect of what it’s actually like to work in a restaurant.

«Big Night» will show you what it’s like to fail.
Four out of five restaurants fail in the first five years . This mouth-watering film that stars Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub as Italian immigrant brothers also shows what it’s like when a restaurant isn’t thriving. Viewers will empathize with the frustration of the cook when faced with Americans only looking for the Americanized versions of the food they cook.
When it looks like the brothers will need to pack up and return to Italy, Tucci’s character still cooks his brother and their waiter a perfect omelet, enjoying this last breakfast together while wondering what they’re going to do now.
«Party Down» understands that the food service industry is often a pitstop.
This brilliant, but short-lived show about a catering company in Los Angeles was famous for its slacking out-of-work artists who refused to admit they were waiters. They neglect work, do drugs, and hook up with each other and the guests, reminding us that not everyone in the food industry is passionate about the work they do. These people might be serving you with a smile, but could be dreaming about their novel getting published or their agent landing them a role.
«Bob’s Burgers» shows what it’s like to run a family business.
Bob and Linda Belcher own a burger restaurant in a seaside town with their children, who often act as their extra employees. They may engage in more wacky hi-jinks than other fast-food eateries, but they have the restaurant staples such as regulars, a rivalry with the restaurant across the street, a weird, but forgiving landlord, a failed attempt at weekend brunch, and the constant stress of owning a restaurant.
«Ratatouille» may inspire you to cook.
It’s doubtful that a rat is cooking your upscale cuisine, but French food culture is spot-on in this Pixar classic. The climactic win over the cynical critic, Ego, comes down to Remy the Rat’s universal goal to connect and his understanding that a good meal can make you feel like home. The mythos behind the kitchen staff is also on point; you will be threatened if you don’t keep your station clear and you might be working alongside an ex-con who killed a man with his thumb.
«Waiting…» might scare you into never eating out again.
The staff of Shenaniganz is in limbo with their lives, so they treat each other like a big dysfunctional family. The biggest takeaways from this film are that if you’re a rude customer, the entire waitstaff will find out and that the perky, smiling waitress might have a mouth like a sailor off the floor. Although the infamously disgusting scene involving a meal sent back to the kitchen is widely regarded as over-the-top, restaurants don’t always follow code . The film’s writer, Rob McKittrick, wrote the script while working as a waiter, so who knows if the «five-second rule» is fake or not either.
It’s refreshing to see an impossibly tiny kitchen and self-taught chefs in «Today’s Special.»
«Today’s Special» features a chef who believes greatness lies for him in French culinary training, but he returns to his parents’ Indian restaurant when his dad falls ill. A taxi driver without a fancy background teaches the protagonist to really learn how to combine flavors in a way that moves people. The movie reminds us that the best and most inventive food is not always in Michelin-starred restaurants, but often tucked away in a corner of Queens that you’ll only know about through word-of-mouth.
While working in a restaurant can sometimes even seem glamorous, all kitchens are dysfunctional found-families with just barely enough space.

The Top Five Waiters in Movie History
If you’ve ever waited tables a day in your life you would know that it’s a very thankless and sometimes demeaning job. It can be a great job if you’re really into it, and the tips will usually reflect that. But if you’re going into waiting for the money then you need to 1) be a college student paying for school, or 2) have another job to fall back on. Seriously, unless you work for a prestigious restaurant or other establishment that can afford to pay you well, this is not the job to make a fortune at. In film it’s also a job that’s easy to use as a parody, so that people can actually see what goes on behind the scenes. Servers are nice to people so long as the people are nice to them, otherwise expect your server to get a little testy.
Here are just a few guys that might not be the best examples, but are still the top in how they deal with the customers.
Linguini – Ratatouille
We start off with a prime example of what a server can be like when they’re properly motivated and play to their strengths. Linguini is not a cook by any means, but when Remy finally takes the reins he at least comes to understand that the best way he can help out is to wait tables, and he does so with great aplomb.
Tyler Durden – Fight Club
I felt the need to include Tyler simply because he isn’t the best waiter, nor is he the nicest waiter. But he’s an expert at getting back at people in the worst ways. In essence, he’s the best worst waiter you’ve ever seen. So yes he does a lot of gross things to the food, but unless he’s doing it unprovoked there’s a chance that he’s doing it in response to someone that didn’t feel the need to filter their comments.
Waiter in Road Trip – Road Trip
Can’t remember the guy’s name, but during breakfast rush it isn’t the best time to get picky. The image of what he does with the french toast is sick enough, but the fact that you can see the outline of it in his sweatpants as he walks away is just, ah, yikes. So why is he one of the best? Have you ever walked around with two slices of toast in your pants?
Rich Ferente – The Slammin’ Salmon
There’s always going to be hilarity when you introduce this well-run cast. Rich is kind of a slime but he’s the type of guy that knows how to work his way around nearly anything and as a result he tends to get his way more often than not. He also has a lot of redeeming qualities which are allowed to develop throughout the film. In the end he comes out on top and becomes a good guy.
Monty – Waiting
DO NOT BREAK THE CARDINAL RULE. This should be etched in stone in some restaurants because it is a code that a lot servers live by. If you’re in a restaurant be polite. The main reason for this is that most of the time you don’t get to see your food before it’s delivered. Gross as it might seem and illegal as it is, do you really want to upset your server?
So when this article says “Top 5 Waiters” I guess it should say “Top 5 Waiters you won’t ever forget”. Truly, be nice to your servers, one and all.
