Movies about Vlogger
The Internet has changed our lives. Today everyone can share their recipe, story, and innermost thoughts. Blogs on various platforms have replaced guidebooks, cookbooks, and even textbooks for us.
Blogging is rapidly transforming from entertainment and personal expression into a popular business. I have prepared a list of movies about bloggers and their lives every blogger can relate to.
This movie list will not leave indifferent those who want to try themselves in this exciting and profitable career. After all, the pictures will show you the shadow side of blogging.
Social media in movies.
Ingrid Goes West, 2017.
Ingrid is obsessed with her idol Taylor on social media. Because of this, she moves to Los Angeles and does her best to make friends with a girl.
Surprisingly, the film announced as a comedy about a hysterical girl, turned out to be a sharp social picture of one of the most pressing topics of modern society – the Internet. In one scene, Ingrid sneaks into a Halloween party dressed as a ghost to charge her phone without being noticed. This delicately presented scene fully embodies the main issue – people living in the network are invisible in real life. They have nothing to offer the outside world because they are not ready to interact with ordinary people who do not live the beautiful life they want.
We see a drama about people for whom the sound of an Instagram notification has become the soundtrack of life, and their best friends are those they have never seen in real life.
Sweat, 2021.
Sylwia is a fitness guru and famous blogger with 600k followers. At the same time, in reality, the heroine feels lonely and dreams of a loving partner. Once, she created a sincere video about her feelings on her page. The post goes viral, but Sylwia has a stalker. Now the main character needs to become as invisible as possible, but this is unrealistic for her!
The film’s premise is apparent: the creators are pitting an online life and virtual friends against the loneliness of reality. The scene where the heroine meets her mother at a birthday party makes it clear that the parent has always been emotionally distant from Sylwia but simultaneously very demanding. It is partly why the girl went into social networks, where she finally feels genuine joy.
Director Magnus von Horn has achieved what few can – to capture the modern phenomenon of “the fragmented self.”
Julie & Julia, 2009.
I think it is the most famous movie about bloggers. The film tells about two women united by one passion – cooking. Julia Child lives in 1950s Paris and is on her way to becoming an outstanding chef. She does not even realize that she will write an absolute culinary bestseller, which in 50 years will brighten up the life of young journalist Julie Powell.
Julie ambitiously decides to cook 524 dishes from Julia Child’s book in a year to take her mind off the grind. She describes her successes in detail in a blog that is becoming wildly popular. What a brilliant idea!
Without a doubt, Julia & Julia is an ideal dream about a perfect blogging career.
Tragedy Girls, 2017.
The plot of the film is very similar to Scream 4. Tragedy Girls’ motto: “To become famous, you don’t have to invent anything. You just need to get into trouble.”
Two classmates run a page on the social network where they talk about the antics of a maniac who has appeared in their city. In truth, they are the serial killers themselves. And all because, according to the heroines, this is how you can get an excellent post reach rate.
This tape balances on the verge of horror and black comedy. The director creates both wholly charming and insane heroines ready for anything to have their accounts viewed as often as possible. Also, Tragedy Girls is an example of a «trash movie,» but you will watch it to the end because the events are fast and interesting.
It seems to me that the film would turn out to be much more interesting if the director tried to make not a comedic horror but a psychological thriller about growing up and becoming girls as sophisticated killers. The main characters are not stupid schoolgirls but very cold and prudent killers; their actions are organized and thoughtful, and they are not prone to pity.
Eight Grade, 2018.
Kayla Day is an eighth-grader going through a difficult period of growing up. She blogs on YouTube and helps teen viewers overcome adversity, build self-esteem and be more confident.
However, in life, Kayla is not at all what she appears in the commercials. The insecure girl does not have many friends, and the only feeling that haunts her is the feeling of uselessness to the world around her. Kayla hopes that her life will change dramatically after the end of the eighth grade.
For me, this movie is a commentary on a modern society obsessed with social media representation that quietly descends into hypocrisy and self-deception.
Selfie, 2014 series.
Eliza Dooley is an image-obsessed beauty. She has 263,000 followers who follow her every move, but she has no real friends at all. She wants to improve her life and turns to Henry for help. This guy is a real pro at marketing, and he will definitely teach Eliza how to please people.
The series is generally light and enjoyable, and I watched it in one breath. It’s a pity that Selfie was not appreciated.
Mainstream, 2020.
It is one of my most beloved films about blogging. Frankie, who dreams of feats in art, but is forced to work as a waitress, meets a crazy guy named Link. The girl writes down his impromptu manifesto about painting and uploads it to YouTube. The video quickly becomes popular, and the characters turn into the main counterculturists of the generation. Still, their growing fame quickly turns them into those they could not stand until recently.
Mainstream is a film about the rise of YouTube industry stars who turn from adventurers into like-addicted trash content creators. The story, created and directed by Gia Coppola, is not so much about the absurdity of Internet popularity but about the deformation of the human personality in search of the masses’ approval.
This film offers one of the most sober stories – even the most original and daring authors eventually sell out and become part of the mainstream.
The last three pictures are great documentaries.
Jawline, 2019.
The plot is two parallel stories. Austyn has an oppressed life in the province; he lives with his brother and mother. And a successful manager from Los Angeles who turns cute streamers into superstars for many years. To escape poverty and help the family, Austyn is persistently developing his TikTok. But he can’t do it alone. After all, this is a complex business. But the demand for people like Austin is excellent.
The film dives into the behind-the-scenes life of rising live television stars and opens your eyes to the realities of teenage social media stardom. It is impossible to tear yourself away from the spectacle that seems ordinary at first glance.
The Story of Content: Rise of the New Marketing 2015.
A documentary about the side of the world of influencers that often remains in the shadows. How do content creators actually impact business, and not vice versa? Representatives of the world’s largest brands, like Red Bull, Kraft, and Marriott, talk about the modern evolution of content marketing.
We Live in Public, 2009.
The documentary shows us the daily life of a blogger with all the realism. Once, Josh Harris initiated an unprecedented experiment. More than a hundred artists settled in an underground bunker in the center of New York were filming everything that happened to them around the clock.
This project was soon closed, but Harris decided not to stop there. This time, he decided to become the subject of an experiment by convincing his fiancée to put cameras around the house. This bold experiment ended sadly for Harris – he broke up with his fiancee, lost most of his fortune, and left New York. Director Ondi Timoner has been following the fate of Harris for a long time – the result was this picture, watching which every viewer can feel like Big Brother.
If you want to see more movies about social media addiction – check out my Fall 2022 review. The film is about the story of what can be done to get your post viral.
Závěrečná slova.
In these funny and sad films, I saw myself many times. It seems to me that blogging is impossible without pursuing popularity. But what price do we pay for it?

10 Horror Movies About Social Media Influencers
In some horror movies, social media can be pretty scary, and not just because of ghosts.
As social media and the digital age more and more influence people in everyday life, it only makes sense that it would seep into the hororový žánr. There are even a few horror films that are filmed in the style of viral videos or live streams. Some of these movies could arguably be retellings of classic horror stories, just with a digital twist.
Many classic horror stories have a moral at heart, and social media horror films are no exception. Often, things like cyberbullying or an obsession with getting clout just have to be punished by the dark powers that be. In fact, some of these films highlight the actual dangers associated with social media in real life.
10 We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021)
In Všichni jdeme na světovou výstavu, lonely Casey lives with her widowed father. She decides to take part in an online challenge known as the «World’s Fair Challenge.» Casey chants that she wants «to go to the World’s Fair» three time, then covering her screen with blood and watching a short video. By her next video, however, Casey reveals she used to have a sleepwalking problem and claims she may be regressing. She then receives a strange video using a distorted version of her face, asking to make contact with the user, known as «JLB.»
Casey is warned that the challenge might soon take over her. Her videos becoming more and more unhinged, culminating in her threatening to kill her own father at the risk of her own life. The story ends on an ambiguous note: Casey claims that she was just playing along to the challenge the whole time, and JLB claims he later befriended the real Casey in real life.
9 Clickbait (2021)
In Clickbait, college student Bailey is a trending vlogger, but she soon finds her clout threatened by another creator who is suffering from cancer. Then, Bailey and becomes targeted by a stalker after a party. However, this turns out to be a blessing in disguise for her online career, as she becomes popular once more. Because of this, Bailey is perfectly happy keeping the case unsolved, with the stalker on the prowl. A detective is tasked with investigating the case, but seems too incompetent to be any meaningful help.
However, Bailey’s luck is pushed too far, as she ends up kidnapped by her stalker. It seems like Bailey’s only hope is her roommate Emma. All in all, the horror story serves as a satire to how people can be willing to sell their soul, and ignore common sense, all for fortune, fame, and the status of being the next big influencer.
8 Kimi (2022)
Kimi gets its name from a fictitious smart speaker, which monitors users for the sake of its algorithm. Angela Childs, who works remotely for Amygdala, the company behind Kimi, spends her days in near-isolation, working on software and analyzing data. Her only contact with the outside world is a neighbor, Terry. One day, Angela gets a threatening video depicting an assault and learns it may be connected to Bradley Hasling, the Amygdala CEO.
Angela’s attempts to report the murder backfire when she finds herself in the middle of a cover-up. Soon, Angela faces off against kidnappers who plot to kill her next. In the end, the film isn’t too hard on new technology, as the Kimi device might just be what helps Angela overcome her attackers in the nick of time. Of course, a handy nail gun can also prove just as helpful.
7 Spree (2020)
Spree‘s Kurt wants to be the next big thing in social media. After all, such a dream seems well within reach when even a child he used to babysit has become a viral star. While working for a ride-share program, the titular Spree, Kurt creates a live stream giving lessons on how to become famous. Unfortunately, Kurt will do anything to get noticed, even killing his passengers. However, Kurt’s only viewer believes the murders are fake.
Soon, Kurt meets up with more social media stars, and they don’t necessarily survive the encounters, though it does grant Kurt more viewers. It soon becomes clear the killings aren’t a hoax, as Kurt becomes known as «The Rideshare Killer,» but the police have little to go on. Of course, taking the mysterious killer down might end up the next viral sensation.
6 Followers (2021)
Sledujících, také známý jako Kazeta, is a found-footage film that shows internet fame isn’t just for the living. Jonty Craig wants to make a career as a social media influencer, but has to work his way up after being publicly disgraced. However, he soon gets help from an unexpected source. The flat he shares with three roommates turns out to be haunted by a ghost from the 1990s named Dawn.
The ghosts prove to be a viral hit, with his roommates soon joining up to help launch their own social media careers. Even Becky, a student counselor, gets involved in the action to help her life-coaching business. However, this clout may come at a price, as the characters begin to realize who really is controlling things. Sledujících is filmed in a «found-footage» style, which makes sense in a world where everything seems to be recorded. Even the videos slowly change in quality as the characters are able to afford new equipment.
5 Influencer (2022)
vliv‘s Madison is a professional influencer who decides to use a vacation to Thailand as «work trip,» sharing images of herself on social media going on adventures while she’s really lounging at a luxury hotel. Madison soon befriends CW, who shows her around the area. Things take a dark turn when someone breaks into Madison’s hotel room, and she is convinced to stay until in the country until she regains her passport.
CW not only turns out to be behind this, but soon abandons Madison on a remote island and targets another influencer. CW soon has to cover her tracks when Madison’s boyfriend comes to the area and grows suspicious. Ultimately, Madison will have to face off against CW on her own. In the end, the story warns against making your life seem grander than it really is, or someone might just want to take it.
4 The Deep House
In Hluboký dům, Ben and Tina are on a trip through Europe with an interest in investigating the paranormal. Naturally, the trek is recorded on social media. While in France, on the advice of a local, Pierre, they investigate a remote lake and find the titular deep house underneath the waters. Unfortunately, investigating inside the house unleashes malevolent, living corpses within.
It comes to light that the house was owned by a family that perform ritual sacrifices and was killed by a mob. Only the family’s son managed to escape, and he’s none other than Pierre. The ghosts want Ben and Tina to join their little family, but, even if they manage to escape the forces of black magic and the undead, they are already within dangerous waters.
3 Talk To Me (2023)
Mluv se mnou has been compared to «The Monkey’s Paw,» for the age of social media. Mia lost her mother and, on her remembrance day, tries to get her mind off things with the latest viral fad. Players use an embalmed hand to summon spirits, and allowing them to take possession of a host body, if only for a few minutes. While at a party, Mia and her friends try out the spooky game for themselves. Each player gets a vision privy only to them. The viral part of the game comes from posting players’ reactions on social media.
Soon, even the skeptics find themselves obsessed with the game. Unfortunately, the players might soon take things too far. The spirits may have been released and are no longer so easily controlled.
2 Deadstream (2022)
In Mrtvý proud, Shawn is a disgraced content creator who lost both sponsors and fans to a controversial video. It seems like his last hope is to put on a livestream in a haunted house, known as the Death Manor, said to be haunted by the ghost of a dead heiress with interests in poetry and the occult. Even reports of deaths connected to the house don’t deter him. In a twist on a classic horror trope, Shawn will forfeit his sponsorship if he stops the livestream too early and overlooks a part of the house.
Shawn later gets unexpected company when Chrissy, a fan of his, joins him in the house. Unfortunately for Shawn, he acts a bit too hasty, destroying a mysterious symbol in the house that was actually protecting him. Naturally, the ghost is closer than he thinks, too. It turns out that the heiress wants an audience for her poetry, reminding viewers that social media may seem modern, but an obsessive desire for validation is just human nature.
1 Unfriended (2015)
Nevlídný starts with the death of a high school student, Laura Barns, after a humiliating video of her starts trending online. A year later, her former best friend, Blaire, is in a group chat that is getting pestered by an intruder known as «billie227.» However, Blaire soon realizes the account used to belong to Laura.
Laura is able to force the group members to confess to horrible things they’ve done on pain of death. Even an attempt to contact the police has Laura on the other line.
