Part THE GREAT ESCAPE, part standard sports movie, Huston’s VICTORY limps along until hitting full stride with a brilliantly staged soccer sequence that provides the film’s climax. The setting is a WW II POW camp, where major von Sydow, a former member of the German national soccer team, persuades Allied prisoner Caine, a former English international player, to put together a team to play a «friendly» match against a German team. With the intervention of the Nazi propaganda machine, the contest escalates into a confrontation between the German national team and an all-star squad of Allied prisoners to be played in Colombes Stadium in Paris. With their American trainer Stallone, in a key role, the Allies plan a daring escape to take place during the game. Among the real-life soccer stars in the film are Brazilian great Pele; Moore, captain of England’s 1966 World Cup champions; and Argentine superstar Ardiles. Alternately hokey and inspiring, the climactic game, which features the crowd chanting victoire and bursting into «La Marseillaise,» is unquestionably VICTORY’s highlight and good enough reason to sit through the rest of the film.

For a soccer starved kid growing up in the United States during the 80’s, this movie was one of the few ways for me to be able to watch soccer/football on tv. Pele is in it so that pretty much sealed the deal for me and I’d beg my mom to rent me this movie just about every weekend.

Hollywood Victory: The Movies, Stars, and Stories of World War II

Diving into the expansive and sumptuous vault of the Turner Classic Movies Library, Blauvelt (managing editor, IndieWire) explores Hollywood’s collective response to World War II, from the creation of war films to actors entertaining the troops. A strong theme that emerges is Hollywood’s singular unity of intent and purpose once the United States entered the war. Short chapters, grouped in five sections, chart the progression of the war and Hollywood’s involvement. Topics include the United States’ initial apathy and isolation tendencies; the country’s responses to Hitler and the growing Nazi threat; the response of Jewish film producers; heroic movie stars who joined the armed forces (Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Clark Gable among others); fundraising; cinematic depictions of the war; and Black actors’ experiences. The text is adorned with more than 150 beautiful photographs, including a full-page take-your-breath-away black-and-white glamour shot of Veronica Lake, whose management had to change her signature eye-obscuring, peek-a-boo hairstyle because of the rate of industrial accidents among the Rosie-the-Riveters who copied her.

VERDICT A fun, informative, and stunning look at the American movie industry’s role in the success of the war effort.
