25 Great Movies About Terribly Dysfunctional Families
It’s almost that time of year: the holiday season, when we are forced to spend plenty of time with our crazy families. Many of us will be traveling long distances home for awkward dinners with our extended families, biting our tongues when it comes to political matters and keeping long-held secrets hidden away. But, it could be worse: you could be a member of these 25 movie families, who are most likely much more insane than your own.
Domů na svátky
It’s the quintessential Thanksgiving movie (one of the few, really) featuring a crazy family: mother-daughter madness, homophobic sisters, obnoxious kids, and a destroyed turkey.
The Godfather Trilogie
Let’s just count these three movies as one, OK? After all, the screwed up family problems don’t end in the first movie; fratricide rears its ugly head, plus there’s Francis Ford Coppola’s own poor choice to cast his own daughter in the third film.
Margot na svatbě
The relationship between sisters is a frequently explored cinematic trope, but rarely is it so biting than in Noah Baumbach’s Hamptons-set comedy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DNAI9bhBFU
Taková zvláštní rodinka
In this modern classic, the Tenenbaums clan is the perfect dysfunctional family: quirky, weird, estranged, yet super stylish.
obyčejní lidé
There’s no place quite as chilly as Lake Forest, Illinois, as Robert Redford’s dramatic tearjerker depicts a group of emotional Midwesterners trying their best to cope (or not to cope) with a death in the family.
Rachel se vdává
Cinema’s most multicultural wedding ceremony is overshadowed by a drug-addicted sister and the most dramatic loading of a dishwasher ever captured on film.
Eve’s Bayou
If you discovered your father cheating on your mother, wouldn’t you put a voodoo curse on him? Seems totally normal to me.
Dogtooth
A dark satire in which two Greek parents deliberately confuse their three kids about the world in a masochistic fashion ends, predictably, not well for anyone.
Flirtování s katastrofou
This wacky comedy about a guy finding his wacky birth parents features Mary Tyler Moore’s character showing off her perfect breasts to her son within the first 20 minutes.
V Grifters
Spoiler alert: there’s some mild incest that could either be sister-on-brother or mother-on-son, proving that a family of con artists is perhaps the worst kind of family.
Magnólie
Terrible fathers populate the Los Angeles of Paul Thomas Anderson, where they’re only outnumbered by the frogs that fall from the sky.
Mommie Nejdražší
A perennial Mother’s Day classic for Old Hollywood obsessives, gay guys, and everyone who hates wire hangers.
Grey Gardens
Just imagine how crazy your mother would drive you if you had to live with her in a dilapidated mansion in East Hampton with a few hundred cats as she constantly reminds you of how you could have married a Kennedy.
Tokio příběh
Dysfunctional families aren’t specific to the United States: this classic Japanese film proves that ungrateful children are a universal problem.
Texaský masakr motorovou pilou
The family that slays together stays together, but they also put themselves at risk of accidental mutilation. (Can you imagine how difficult it is to clean that place?)
Květiny v podkroví
Being locked in a small space with your siblings is bad enough, but it’s worse when it’s at the behest of your awful mother and your scary grandmother. (Per usual, incest ensues.)
Oliheň a velryba
Being a teenager is hard enough, but the awfulness is likely to be exaggerated when your parents split up and your dad is trying to sleep with the girl you have a crush on (and, meanwhile, your younger brother can’t stop masturbating in public).
Smrt při pohřbu
Funerals are the settings where family secrets are most likely to be spilled, but this British comedy makes your typical burial seem like a piece of cake considering the family its the center is full of jerks, drug users, and a dwarf.
Virgin sebevraždy
Catholic fanaticism in ’70s-era Michigan takes a nasty turn, providing the moral that you shouldn’t lock your five daughters away from the dudes who want to make out with them.
Dům Ano
You know Thanksgiving is going to be weird when your mom announces her intention to hide the knives from your manic-depressive, Jackie O-obsessed sister who hates your fiancée.
Family Kámen
The eldest Stone brother brings his uptight girlfriend home to meet the family and ask for his grandmother’s engagement ring (get it?!), only to find that everyone in his free-spirited clan hates her.
Štěstí
On the one hand, you have three sisters who pretty much despise each other. On the other, a child-molesting dad who teaches his son about ejaculation. Don’t watch this with your parents.
Denis Leary plays a criminal who is forced to spend Christmas with a bickering couple and their awful family, who he’s holding hostage.
Rodičovství
Are the Buckmans cinemas greatest dysfunctional family? In Ron Howard’s ensemble comedy, the Midwestern clan deals with a slew of emotional issues in the worst possible ways.
Divocí a báječní běloši ze Západní Virginie
This Appalachian clan of murderers, thieves, drug dealers, pill poppers, and tap dancers is not just the center of this documentary about a nearly lost group of mountain outlaws — these characters also won the hearts of an audience that has made the film a modern cult classic.
TOP TEN BAD PARENTS IN FILM
This week I’ll be seeing Precious, which seems to be sporting some bad parenting tips for the younger generation to pick up on and I decided to list what seems to be some bad parents that I’ve noticed over the years that have been put on the big screen for us to enjoy.
TEN – Harry Wormwood (Matilda)
How could a movie made for children have such horrible people in it? Harry Wormwood (Danny DeVito) is one of those fathers that makes you know that people can be evil in life and Matilda makes you happy that movies always seem to come with a happy ending promised to us all.
NINE – Steve Zissou (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou)
How could Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) be a bad father? Well when he finds out that the funding for his documentary to go find the shark that killed his best friend is gone. So he decides to accept his (maybe) son that he just met because he has money and will be able to fund the film. Now if that isn’t setting a bad example very late in the game then what is?
EIGHT – Col. Frank Fitts (American Beauty)
Frank Fitts (Chris Cooper) is Lester Burnham’s (Kevin Spacey) neighbour who is so unapproving of everything that’s changing about the neighbourhood. When, eventually, he finds out about his son’s marijuana business he goes overboard and becomes more than just a bad father but a horrible dad that you hope gets run over by a bus one day.
SEVEN – Gideon Largeman (Garden State)
Gideon Largeman (Ian Holm), after his wife has an accident, has been unnecessarily medicating his son, Andrew (Zach Braff), and also blaming him for the accident which was a complete innocent act by a child. He wins the shit daddy award for continually being a miserable old crap with no common sense and since he’s a doctor I hope he would know better than to do what he’s doing to himself and his son.
SIX – Darth Vader (Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back)
So imagine after all the crap you’ve made for your son’s life after leaving him to be with the dark side. When the son comes back to do battle you go and chop off his hand and let him know that you (the evilest being in the entire galaxy) is his father.
FIVE – Mallory’s Dad (Natural Born Killers)
Here is a one of those few instances where the character, Mallory’s Dad (Rodney Dangerfield), is shown to us in this weird scenario where it is made obvious that he is abusing his children and his wife but they decide to put it all to a laugh track to make sure that we are all as uncomfortable as possible watching it.
FOUR – Gertrude Baniszewski (An American Crime)
Here is one of those worst stories ever, and the story is about horrible child abuse which comes in every type and flavour. After Gertrude (Catherine Keener) finds out that Sylvia (Ellen Page) has been saying things about her children she begins to punish her, and these punishments may not be that graphic on screen but it definitely doesn’t help that I have an imagination and consistently filled in the blanks.
THREE – Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)
Your step-mother, Lady Tremaine (Eleanor Audley), has made you into the house’s slave after the death of your father. Even after your charming prince comes to find you she attempts to hide you away from him and push her own daughters onto the prince hoping he’ll forget all about Cinderella.
TWO – Daniel Plainview (There Will Be Blood)
The movie begins with Mr. Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis) doing a good thing (i.e. taking in the child that is not his and raises him, educates him, etc.) and then eventually chucks him off to some boarding school the moment he isn’t of any use to him getting land for his business. Which makes him a shitty dad award. We’ll always remember this scene.
ONE – Jack Torrance (The Shining)
“Here’s Johnny. ” Here comes the great film of Zářící where Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and his family head up to house sit this luxury hotel while it’s shut down for the off-season. While there Jack goes insane and eventually murders his entire family and that is why he wins the shit parent of the millennium award from me.

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen. What, Jack Torrence is a bad father? Man, you’re so picky :P. Solid list. one other recommendation I forgot earlier: Mommie Dearest.
Funny. I think you need to add the Dursleys (from Harry Potter) and the wicked stepmother in Snow White. The Dursleys keep Harry in the broom cupboard and put bars on his window when they do finally give him a real room while completely spoiling their son Dudley. Snow White’s stepmom is jealous of her daughter being prettier than her so she attempts to murder her – twice!
I never thought of HP, but yes they are pretty much assholes.
Hilarious list choice and I lvoe the ones you’ve come up with. Ingenious! The Dursleys aren’t really parents though… Totally agree with Univarn on Mommy Dearest. «No more wire hangers. «
You don’t get worthless shocks. Kubrick’s version of The Shining is an insidious film. It gets under your skin. In other words, it isn’t for Pavlovian dogs that have spent a lifetime being conditioned by cretinous nonsense.
sybil’s mother from sybil she did unspeakable things to her daughter, and we cannot forget joan crawford in mommy dearest.
