Movies about Uninhibited rivalry
Hilary And Jackie rental FilmFour Cert 15
Anand Tucker’s very impressive film about the celebrated cellist Jacqueline du Pré and her sister Hilary is a million miles from a disease-of-the-week TV movie that its tragic real-life story would suggest. The multiple sclerosis that stunted Du Pré’s life — she was unable to play beyond the age of 27 — doesn’t make an appearance until very late on.
The film is about the closeness and rivalry that sisters share more strongly than other siblings, brought to fierce and believable life by Emily Watson’s capricious star cellist and Rachel Griffiths’s unshowy Hilary, who had musical talent but opted for family life. The passing of time is skilfully done (a timelapse sequence of trophies filling shelves economically sums up their childhood as prodigies) and Jackie’s loneliness and thoughtlessness is encapsulated when an eagerly unwrapped parcel home turns out to be her dirty laundry.
Watson’s Jackie is uninhibited and sometimes unhinged — whether it is «artistic temperament» as they used to say or life as «trained freaks» as Watson puts it, stars can and do stay in a remarkably childlike state, and that’s how the movie views Jackie. The film is based on a book by Hilary and her brother Piers, who scarcely appears in the film, but this is no Mommie Dearest, with internecine scores being settled. «The more you give her, the more she wants,» is the key phrase.
What she wanted famously included borrowing her sister’s husband for sexual purposes, a situation which is handled with a remarkable lack of sensationalism. Tucker is even-handed enough to show us some of the events from both points of view, which also occasionally makes it seem a little long-winded. But it is beautifully photographed by David Johnson, with the occasional flourish when the plot calls for it, and Watson and Griffiths (last seen on video as a gun-toting nunogram in Divorcing Jack) make it moving too. And for lowbrows, there’s a very neat duet of You Really Got Me by Du Pré and Barenboim. Eat your heart out, Kennedy.
The Negotiator rental and DVD retail £15.99 Warner Bros Cert 15
It’s hard to think of two actors who have been great in the 90s as often as The Negotiator’s stars, Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Unfortunately, director F Gary Gray pitches them into a pretty mundane action flick with a fair few cliches: «your gun and your badge» are soon demanded of revered hostage negotiator Jackson by his chief. He’s been set up, and the film is about why, by whom, and how he is going to get out of it. Bluffs and double-bluffs ensue, with the late, great JT Walsh mixed up in it. It’s efficient and tense, but little more, even when Spacey arrives on the scene to negotiate for the hostages Jackson has taken. (We first see him trying to negotiate a truce between wife and daughter in the film’s only touch of comedy.) After having a so-so hostage movie, Albino Alligator, as his directorial debut, you’d think Spacey would have had enough of them.
And The Beat Goes On rental Odyssey Cert PG
Another musical biography from a book, this time Sonny Bono’s version of his and Cher’s rise to fame, Vegas and TV series. You wouldn’t expect much more than TV movie level — say ITV’s recent Diana Dors-athon — and you don’t get much more from this cast of unknowns. But there’s one major surprise: Renee Faia makes a remarkably good Cher verbally and visually, with the sulky, sardonic air the singer had even as a teenager. On the other hand, if Little Richard ever sees his chubby, camp impersonator, he might be tempted to sue.
Tina Fey and Jason Bateman have fun with sibling rivalry in ‘This Is Where I Leave You’

Celebrity phone hackers won’t find any nude photos on Tina Fey or Jason Bateman’s handsets.
“We just didn’t physically look that good,” Fey jokes of the younger generation of stars who were recently hacked, like Jennifer Lawrence. “People look better now, maybe because of the hormones in the meat! A picture of a girl in her bra in 1987 wouldn’t have been that great.”
In a bored teenage voice, she adds, “‘You think you’re so great, then why are you taking pictures in a bathroom?’”
Fey and Bateman play squabbling sibs in the dramedy “This Is Where I Leave You,” opening Friday, but when they see each other at the Toronto Film Festival, Fey tousles his longish hair and affectionately remarks, “I like this — it’s like your ‘Little House on the Prairie’ days!”
Their rapport is funny and full of riffs. Fey, 44, is a year younger than Bateman, and they share a smart, spry sense of humor. They’re perfectly cast in “Leave You,” about a family returning to their New England home to sit shiva for their deceased dad and deal with their uninhibited psychologist mother (Jane Fonda).
“Uninhibited” perfectly describes Fey (“Saturday Night Live” writer and “30 Rock” star, awards-show host extraordinaire) and Bateman (“Arrested Development” leading man, former child actor, and director-star of the recent “Bad Words”). After discussing the appeal of their new film, they’re off and running, talking about the nude celeb selfie scandal, among other topics.
“I gotta tell ya,” Bateman begins, “I was proud I didn’t click [on the stolen photos], but someone showed ’em to me…”
— “‘But I had my právník click for me!,’” Fey interrupts.
— “There are some skutečný troubling images there,” Bateman goes on. “Wasn’t Rob Lowe in 1988 the first to get in trouble [with leaked video]? We thought, ‘OK, no one will do this again.’”
Which brings up the nude pictures that caused Vanessa Williams to relinquish her Miss America title in 1984, before she became a pop singer.
“Now, to launch an album, Williams would mít to do it [have nude photos released],” snarks Fey, “and on the VMAs!”
Fey acknowledges how disturbing the recent theft of revealing pictures was from stars that also include Kate Upton.”There’s an impulse with this to blame the women,” Fey says. “It’s not their fault. It’s as bad as if someone went to their home and pulled the covers down while they were asleep. But you know, if it was my own kids, I would say, ‘Just don’t do that!’ There for sure is a generational difference.”
Bateman adds, “It’s just a part of what we do now as a culture. You take pictures of stuff you never took pictures of before. … Our kids will never have to remember things, because it’s all in pictures. Want to remember your fourth birthday? There’ll be video of it on your phone.”
Fey nods. “I think it’s all going to short-circuit our brains! I think we’re meant to move forward in time and let things float away.”
The conversation pivots to what is or isn’t acceptable in pop culture — and how, in comedy, the sense that “anything goes” now comes with self-censorship.
“With great power comes great responsibility,” intones Bateman.
“Like Spider-Man!” Fey says, matching his fake seriousness.
“Yeah,” adds Bateman. “Just because you have all that power, all that silk in your wrists, should you squirt it out?”
[Fey gives a little “…Ewww.” ]
“I’d much rather have the freedom, and the obligation to use it responsibly, than be put in a box,” Bateman says. “I think [comedic performers] are just taking what we’re being encouraged to give. I think it’s all in execution and tone. It’s not new: In the ’70s, Archie Bunker said terrible things on ‘All in the Family,’ but it was all in Carroll O’Connor’s performance. You saw lack of intelligence and you laughed.”
“What they said on that show, you could nikdy say on TV today,” adds Fey honestly.
“The thing about TV today that I find amusing,” she continues, “is how people think TV is a two-way connection. It’s still a passive medium! You can blog what you thought about a show, but you’re ne part of it. Louis C.K. makes a show, and it airs — and he doesn’t care what you think about it!”
Fey admits she’s happy her co-hosting gigs on the Golden Globes with her friend and former “SNL Weekend Update” anchor Amy Poehler are loved by fans. Many believe the winning pair have ruined awards hosting for everyone else, but Fey swears she doesn’t think that’s the case.
“Amy and I have fun doing that show, it’s such a low-pressure situation compared to other awards shows, and it’s literally like 5 minutes of stuff!” Fey says. “We’re going to do it one more time, and after that, I don’t know. We signed up for three. This seems like a good time to stop wearing gowns. Or maybe add a li’l satin bunda ! «
Bateman suddenly comes up with a plan: “You guys should do a spin-off awards show! The Tina and Amy Awards!”
“Great idea,” Fey says, slipping into Liz Lemon mode. “Or do a half-hour multicam show o us Hosting awards shows!”
Fey and Poehler are also starring together in a movie due out next year, “The Nest,” about sisters selling the house they grew up in.
The film will offer something different than their co-hosting gigs, Fey says.
“Amy did this one without the wig this time, and with her teeth out,” Fey jokes. “And she did it sober.”
“Whoa!” Bateman exclaims. ” Něčí chasing an Oscar!”

Fictionalizing his childhood’s ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har’el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Artist and musician FKA twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope.

LoveTrue
logline:
After winning Tribeca’s Best Documentary Feature Award in 2011 for her unclassifiable nonfiction debut, Bombay Beach, Alma Har’el returns with the premiere of her hotly anticipated sophomore feature, the lyrical, genre-bending nonfiction film LoveTrue, executive produced by Shia LaBeouf. Using an atmospheric blend of follow-along footage, artful camerawork, and imaginative scenes depicting the past, present, and future of her subjects, Har’el explores the idea of “True Love” by charting the three complicated, dysfunctional real-life relationships as they unfold in distinct corners of the country. Alaskans Blake and Joel pursue a promising romance, in spite of his physical limitations and her uneasiness with her career as a stripper. In Hawaii, free spirit Coconut Willie discovers another side of true love after realizing his son is not biologically his own. And, in New York City, singer/songwriter Victory philosophizes on faith and faithfulness as she and her siblings perform in the streets accompanied by their father John, who abruptly separated from his wife many years prior for reasons that remain mysterious. Set to a hypnotizing score by Flying Lotus and using non-actors to play each’s subject’s younger and older selves LoveTrue is a fascinating exploration about how our past and present experiences shape the decisions we make when the fantasy of “True Love” dissipates.
