Is this Britain’s oldest erotic film? Modern viewers might question how genuinely erotic it is, But it certainly pushes the boundaries of what was permissible in 1896 — and there’s little doubt that it was intended to titillate. Erotica being what it is, it’s possible that other (and perhaps more explicit) examples exist in private hands, but this is certainly the oldest surviving British film of its kind we know of.
Also known (and previously published on BFI Player) as A Victorian Lady in Her Boudoir, the film is credited to Brighton-based pioneer Esmé Collings — making it one of very few of his films to survive. Alongside rather more demure films from around the same time, such as Grandma’s Reading Glass (1900) and As Seen Through a Telescope (1900), it demonstrates that early filmmakers — even in these comparatively inhibited islands — were quick to realise the new medium’s implicit voyeurism.

Dakota Johnson Discusses Difficulty Undressing On Set, After ‘The Lost Daughter’ Release
Dakota Johnson starred in this year’s highly acclaimed psychological drama The Lost Daughter, in which she plays young mum Nina who, throughout the film, is often seen in swimwear, due to continuous beach scenes.
And we can’t forget her role as Anastasia Steele in steamy romantic Fifty Shades trilogy, of which she famously stars alongside Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey.
On camera, and off, Johnson oozes confidence. However, the ELLE UK cover star wasn’t afraid to admit that when it comes to getting undressed on set, she finds it ‘difficult’.
The 32-year-old, who just last month opened up about her complicated feeling towards motherhood in the wake of her recent movie, has now addressed a different issue.
She told W magazine: ‘Some days, I don’t want to take off my clothes on set.’
She added: ‘Just because I look a certain way doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings.’
Specifically referring to her on-screen character Nina, who alongside The Crown’s Olivia Colman helps to portray the ups and downs of motherhood, she explained: ‘My character, Nina, is almost bored by her appearance.
