Movies about Temper
Family movie night! Popcorn. Blankets. Laughter and excitement. What could be better. But movies can be even more than that. Movies can also be life lessons and opportunities for conversations with our kids. If there’s a challenge in life, there’s likely a film that explores it. And speaking of challenges: anger is a HUGE challenge in lots of homes. To help you tackle anger in your family, we picked four movies that could be the centerpiece of your next family movie night.
1. naruby
Předpoklad: Eleven-year-old Riley has five emotions: joy, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger. Each is personified by by an animated character who helps her navigate big changes in her life. But when a few of her feelings go missing, Riley feels empty.
Body mluvení: Every emotion has a purpose, and has important messages for us. Even anger. In the movie, what are Anger’s messages? What is Anger trying to protect?
When we don’t listen to those messages, or when we suppress our feelings, it hurts. All of our emotions want us to react in some way. Especially anger. Watch for the moments in the movie when Anger is silenced. Watch for moments when Anger takes control. How did Riley react? When our kids allow anger – or any emotion – to take over, they may make impulsive decisions, or say and do things that they regret. Can your kids think of moments when their anger took control? What message where they getting from their anger?
Additional questions for kids: In the movie, what did Anger look like? What do you think your anger looks like? When your anger wants to take over, what are your other emotions trying to say or do? What are some safe and appropriate ways to handle anger?
2. Wreck-It Ralph
Předpoklad: Ralph is a video game bad guy with a bit of a temper. His job is to “wreck” things, so that the video game hero, Fix-It Felix, can, well, fix it. But the townspeople shun and exclude him because of his actions, and he begins to believe that he truly is a bad person. One day, he runs away from the bullying and stereotypes, and sets out to find acceptance and prove that his temper doesn’t define him.
Body mluvení: Our emotions, our words, and our actions can’t define us. We are so much more than that. From time to time, we all say and do things that we regret. But that doesn’t make us bad people. Notice the bad things that Ralph does, AND the good things. When does he show kindness?
Can your kids think of times when they were labeled because of something they did or said? Have they ever labeled themselves?
Belonging and acceptance are basic human needs. Being excluded hurts, and bullying affects almost every child. Everyone in the family can share their our experiences with bullying, both being bullied, and perhaps even times when were were guilty of bullying. Examine how our actions and words affect others. We can also discuss ways to practice compassion and empathy toward others and ourselves.
Additional questions for kids: How could the town’s people shown more compassion toward Ralph? How can we use our anger to protect and defend ourselves, and others, rather than by hurting people or wrecking things? How could you handle bullying situations in the future? How do you know when you need a reset? What can you do to regroup when you have big feelings like anger?
3 Angry Birds
Předpoklad: To manage angry outbursts, several birds in the community attend anger management therapy. But one day, the birds notice that pigs have taken over the island. Their anger kicks into high gear, and they must decide if they should fight back.
Body mluvení: Anger is a normal emotion children can learn to express in safe, healthy and appropriate ways. As we discuss situations that cause us to feel anger, we can compare inappropriate expressions of anger, like throwing things or exploding, with appropriate expressions, such as retreating to a quiet room, taking deep breaths, pushing against a wall, or scrubbing the shower — yeah, right :).
Anger’s job is to protect us. When the birds feel angry, can you figure out what it is that they’re protecting? Can everyone in the house take a moment to talk about the last time they felt angry? Then can each person think about what their anger might have been trying to protect?
Additional questions for kids: What are some ways your anger has been explosive in the past? What triggers your anger? How do you know when and how to harness your anger for good? What strategies can you use to manage anger in appropriate, safe and healthy ways?
4. Return of the Jedi
Předpoklad: Luke Skywalker is a warrior with special a special power called the Force. The Force requires him to be in tune with his emotions, to feel them flow through him and hear the messages they send him. It requires peacefulness and mindfulness. But his rage-filled father (spoiler alert, it’s Darth Vader) wants him to use the Dark Side of the Force, where he’ll let his anger take over and fuel his actions.
Body mluvení: All emotions, even “dark side” emotions like anger, fear, aggression, and hate, are a normal part of the human experience. Luke feels anger. Luke feels fear. But he doesn’t let those feelings control him like they control Vader. Luke knows those feelings are uncomfortable, but he also knows that they will pass. Look for the moments when Luke feels challenging emotions, and talk about how he takes time to think before he acts. Similarly, look for the moments when Darth Vader acts impulsively on his anger
When does Luke demonstrate mindfulness? Can your kids think of ways that they can use mindfulness to help them reframe challenging situations. Parents should share their own, as well.
Additional questions for kids: What makes you feel anger? How did Luke reframe his anger? How can you do the same? What mindfulness techniques can you practice the next time you feel anger?

10 Great Movies That Will Make You Angry
Different films represent different moods. We can watch a comedy when we’re depressed, or we can watch our favourite arthouse film when we feel like thinking a little more deeply.
Certain films are great for alleviating anger: it’s arguably why films like the action movie or the gangster film have persisted. It gives the viewer a great 2 hours to vicariously live through another character’s life, and do things the average person would never be able to get away with.
Then there is another type of film, the movie that actually makes us angry. For whatever reason, these are movies that may be so upsetting you can only watch them once in a blue moon.
Here are 10 great films that will make you angry.
1. Falling Down (1993)
Falling Down is being included in this list as a sort of therapy: it’s a great film to watch when you’re angry at the world. The film is essentially about one man’s bad day (played by Michael Douglas), and how he reaches his breaking point. Along the way he comments on life and society at large.
Although the main character isn’t a “good guy,” there is something genuinely satisfying about watching him navigate through the world. Falling Down can be officially classified as a drama/thriller, but during the scenes where Douglas’ character is lashing out at various people, they almost play comedically.
For example, when he lashes out at fast food employees for not serving breakfast past 11:30, Adam Sandler’s character does a similar thing in the comedy movie Big Daddy. That is where the similarities end: Falling Down takes the more dramatic approach to a man reaching his breaking point, and he eventually becomes the villain of the story.
2. Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973)
As its title suggests, this film is somewhat difficult to watch. Thriller: A Cruel Picture is a work of exploitation designed to upset you initially. There is no middle ground with this film; it tries to communicate its ideas quickly by going for the extreme. It’s about a young woman who has a very rough life: she is assaulted as a child, loses her ability to speak, and when she grows up she is forced into heroin addiction and prostitution.
The only reason why Thriller: A Cruel Picture is redeeming is because it’s a “rape revenge” movie. It’s an incendiary film that is constantly daring you to stop watching: in the uncut version of the film the filmmakers go as far as intercutting real pornography to give the illusion that the main character is really being sexually abused.
However, the main character’s recurring misfortune pays off by the end when she finally gets her revenge. In order to have the payoff, the filmmakers first go to extreme lengths to upset you.
3. Stojím sám (1998)
Gaspar Noe is a filmmaker that loves to make abrasive films, and his first feature length film set the tone for what would be a bold filmography. I Stand Alone is about an angry butcher who uses almost every second of the film’s lean 92-minute running time to vent his frustrations about life.
The film is designed to upset you wall-to-wall; from the main character’s anger, to his behaviour, to the film’s climax. It’s one of those movies that is so bleak you shouldn’t watch it at the wrong time in your life.
I Stand Alone is so dark and nihilistic, Noe inserts a warning title card near the end of the film giving the viewer the chance to stop watching before it gets even worse. This device was borrowed from an older film called Homicidal (1961), but when Noe uses it we feel genuinely unsure of what he has in store for us.
4. Goodbye Uncle Tom (1971)
Goodbye Uncle Tom is one of those films you can’t really believe exists. It’s about a pair of filmmakers who time travel back to the period of slavery in order to make a documentary. The summary of the film alone is insane.
This film is infuriating for a couple of reasons. First of all: it is problematic to make a film about slavery under the genre of “exploitation” cinema. The concept of slavery is bad enough already; it doesn’t need a grindhouse film to exploit it any further. Secondly, this film was originally released under the guise of being a “documentary,” like the filmmakers’ previous works were (Mondo Cane, and Africa Addio).
By purporting to be a documentary and simultaneously being an exploitation film, Goodbye Uncle Tom stumbles. It is maddening to see reenactments in an exploitation film like this one: they go past the educational aspect, entering the territory of cruelty. However, that’s also what makes such a flagrant film like this one so effective: filmmakers Jacopetti and Prosperi successfully manipulate one of the worst periods of human history to make a truly shocking film.
5. The Accused (1988)
The Accused is a deeply upsetting film about a gang rape, and the ensuing courtroom case that follows. It’s notable for being one of the first major Hollywood films to realistically depict the awfulness that is sexual assault. The brutal rape scene that is the centerpiece of the film is very frustrating, and a very powerful moment.
What is especially notable about The Accused is that it’s loosely based on a true story; it’s not a fictional exploitative story created for the purpose of making a hard-hitting dramatic film. It’s a real unfortunate experience that happens all the time. As a side note: Jodie Foster’s performance in The Accused earned her an Oscar.
