Since bursting onto the scene in 2018, Titans has rapidly become a fan-favourite among Netflix viewers. Throughout the second season, the main antagonist is none other than the man known as the World’s Deadliest Assassin, Deathstroke. After tensions rise between the Titans and their archenemy, Dick Grayson (Robin) returns under the new alias Nightwing and sets up an epic final showdown against his old adversary.

9. Conan the Barbarian (2011) — Conan vs Sandmen and Khalar Zym
Before he became Aquaman, Jason Momoa began rising to international fame when he starred in the 2011 remake of Conan the Barbarian. Even though many viewers said they preferred the original film, the movie had some outstanding fight scenes. One of the more notable fight scenes took place when a witch named Marique rose an army of sandmen to attack Conan. The action didn’t stop there though, after Conan defeated the sandmen in a gruelling battle he was confronted by his nemesis, Khalar Zym and uses the opportunity to instigate a duel.
8. John Wick 3: Parabellum — Motorcycle Fight Scene
There are three guarantees in life, death, taxes and Keanu Reeves starring in world-class action films. John Wick 3 was no exception to that phrase and featured non-stop action from beginning to end. Although the movie had many outstanding combat scenes, watching John Wick fight off a gang of motorcyclists only using a sword was a true indication of the talent he possessed.
7. Gladiator — Maximus vs Commodus
If the question being asked is, are you not entertained? Then the answer would be a resounding yes when it comes to the final duel of Gladiator. Throughout the entire duration of the film, Maximus is forced to take part in gruelling gladiatorial battles for the entertainment of the Roman Emperor, Commodus. Even after being stabbed by the evil Emperor, Maximus was able to channel all the rage he had for the man who viciously crucified his family and challenges Commodus to an epic fight to the death.
6. Troy — Achilles vs Hector
Troy was one of the greatest films of the early 2000s, accumulating $497.4 million USD in box office revenue. Playing the role of the legendary Greek war hero, Achilles, Brad Pitt was involved in many gripping battle scenes. The brilliant storytelling and fierce action eventually culminated when Achillies battled his archnemesis, Hector in a thrilling sword fight to the death.

Many people consider the Lord of the Rings trilogy to be one of the most prolific movie franchises to ever grace the silver screen. A Quentin Tarantino classic, Kill Bill was filled with gore, action and the most outrageous combat scenes. There are many fights during the film that could’ve made this list but only one scene was deemed the clear winner. When The Bride finally faced off against her arch-rival, O-Ren Ishii, she was confronted by a gang of ninjas. Despite being heavily outnumbered, The Bride was able to slay each of the ninjas only using a katana.

Throughout movie history, audiences have witnessed countless sword fights. They’ve involved different types of blades, combatants, and arenas. These help to give each one its own identity, but which ones are the best? Some battles have distinguished themselves as the greatest. Considering the sheer number of sword fights on the silver screen and the high bar, as a result, this is no easy feat.
10 Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan Vs. Darth Maul — Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace
Fans had already seen plenty of lightsaber duels in the original Hvězdné války trilogy. The prequel era set out to give them something completely different. That becomes clear the moment Darth Maul whips out his double-bladed weapon.
His duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi may be noticeably more choreographed than its predecessors, but it’s definitely not lacking in spectacle. The big-screen sequel to Final Fantasy 7 is a plodding, problematic movie, but no one can deny its sublime presentation. Director Tetsuya Nomura has always had a flair for flashy action in games, and that’s on full display here.
It all comes to a head in the long-awaited rematch between Cloud and Sephiroth. Their clash gives a supreme demonstration of what top-tier SOLDIER members can do. They soar around the ruined city, their swords sending shockwaves that demolish the dilapidated buildings. Not only does this offer creative uses of the environment, but it conveys a sense of scope not usually seen in a single duel. Players have witnessed a lot of action in the Final fantasy series and even the VII spin-offs, but this fight is a visual treat sure to put a smile on the most jaded fan’s face.
8 Hector Vs. Achilles — Troy
This epic war film builds this fight up for two hours. Achilles, the greatest warrior in Greece, faces off with Hector, the best fighter in Troy. Viewers learn just how good they both are over the course of the duel.
The battle carries the same sense of progression as the film itself. The combatants start with spears and shields, but the former tools quickly break, forcing them to draw their blades. They finally abandon the shields altogether and rely solely on swords, during which their short length leads to greater risk. This progression conveys tangible desperation throughout the sequence. 7 Kyūzō Vs. Random Moron — Seven Samurai

6 Huo Yuanjia Vs. Qin Lei — Fearless
This biopic was originally intended to cap off Jet Li’s wushu film run, showcasing all the skills he’s accumulated over his martial arts career. Every fight here lives up to that high standard. Li wields numerous weapons over countless arenas, but no duel has the ferocity of this one.
Headstrong Huo Yuanjia goes to kill the unscrupulous Qin Lei, and you feel that during the fight. They strike with such force that their weapons can’t handle it, so they utilize everything in their environment (chairs, pots, etc.) to keep up the attack. As a result, the battle never lets up, maintaining the breakneck pace and adrenaline until the final, fatal blow. By the end, the restaurant is utterly trashed, and the combatants are battered and bloody. These guys don’t wield weapons; they jsou the weapons.
5 Jen Yu Vs. Yu Shu Lien — Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
This movie is famous for its wushu wire-fu. You’d expect another acrobatic fight that goes all over the place, but that’s not the case. On the contrary, this duel relies mainly on skill and precision.
Yu Shu Lien and Jen Yu wield swords and other tools with meticulous expertise. Every move feels calculated, and no effort is wasted.
They know these weapons inside and out as if they were extensions of their own bodies. That’s what distinguishes this contest from many others. It’s essentially a fistfight. It has all the intricate choreography and athletic prowess of a kung fu battle, but one false move can cut you in half. Each time they dodge one of these fatal strikes, one can’t help but wince.
4 Westley Vs. Inigo Montoya — The Princess Bride
Princezna nevěsta is an homage to classic adventure tales, and its most iconic fight scene is an ode to swashbuckling escapades of old. With that comes the charm of those timeless romps.
A tongue-in-cheek tone permeates this sword fight. Wesley and Inigo are clearly having fun with this deadly game, hopping all over their environment without losing step with their blades.

They all work beautifully to give this climactic clash the same sense of adventure as the film itself.
2 Diego De La Vega Vs. Esteban Pasquale — The Mark Of Zorro
Here’s another one with Basil Rathbone. This time, he crosses swords with fellow swashbuckling icon Tyrone Power. The tale involves another folk hero in Zorro, but this masked fox is even more skilled with a blade than Robin Hood.
He soon proves that in a furious fight with Rathbone’s capitan. This match distinguishes itself through speed and skill. It boasts similar strengths as Tygr a drak; it simply applies them to fencing and does so to even greater effect. The blades move almost too rapidly to comprehend. Some of that comes down to sped-up footage, but most of it is attributed to the duelists’ prowess. You can tell these guys know what they’re doing. Zorro has always been framed as the world’s greatest swordsman but never has he seemed deadlier than he is here.

One could list any number of reasons that this seminal battle works. The movements look rough and unrehearsed, creating a welcome sense of authenticity. In addition, the fighters’ gradual fatigue makes it one of the more authentic scraps put to screen. Those aspects definitely help, but what truly sets this clash apart is the story it tells.
Like the rest of the film, this sword fight functions as a chess game between Robert Roy MacGregor and Archibald Cunningham. You can always see them planning their next move, thinking about which angle they should approach from or what stance they should take. This naturally tires and wounds them, and it allows audiences to see which way the battle is turning. The tension ramps up to a crescendo and concludes in a spectacularly emotional fashion. This single sword fight has all the drama of a full-length film, and it’s every bit as satisfying.

«Hrabě Monte Cristo» (2002)
The tenth movie adaptation of the thrilling tome written by Alexandre Dumas tells the harrowing tale of Edmond Dantès, whose friend Fernand Mondego unintentionally betrays him to French authorities. Dantès is imprisoned; however, upon his eventual escape, he vows revenge upon Mondego. During their final confrontation, Mondego wields two swords in an effort to intimidate Dantès — though what he discovers is that his friend no longer believes him worthy of forgiveness or mercy.
#9: Hector vs. Achilles
“Troy” (2004)
In an ambitious adaptation of Homer’s “Iliad,” this epic war film serves its purpose of being entertaining, despite lacking certain specifics of the original tale. Nevertheless, this duel, between Hector, the honorable Prince of Troy, and Achilles, the great Greek warrior and demi-god, is a highlight. Trained to always think ahead of his opponent, Achilles toys with Hector as a cat would a mouse. No thought of clemency ever enters Achilles’ cold and calculating mind.
#8: Yu Shu Lien vs. Jen Yu
“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000)
This confrontation between two old friends is a thing of beauty. The flashing swords and the clanging of metal creates a three-dimensional piece of art as these two evenly matched women fight for their lives. Technically sound and well choreographed, this scene from “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” uses decorations and furniture as fighting implements in addition to swords. True to formal combat rules, each woman acts honorably and respects her opponent.
#7: Zorro vs. Captain Harrison Love
“The Mask of Zorro” (1998)
There is real tension in this scene from “The Mask of Zorro,” especially at the beginning when it seems as if Love might just shoot Zorro and be done with everything. However, the Captain’s dedication to defending his honor prevails and he elects to battle Zorro on his own terms. But what really makes this sword fight so special is that the sets are put to great use: Zorro swings on ropes, jumps onto platforms and almost falls to his death several times before he unmasks himself during Love’s final moments.
#6: Captain Jack Sparrow vs. Captain Hector Barbossa
«Piráti z Karibiku: Prokletí Černé perly» (2003)
The sword fights in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies have always been one of the best components of the films. This scene from the first fantasy swashbuckler flick is arguably the greatest plot twist in the franchise — and it’s all done in stereotypical Sparrow fashion, which consists of both confusing and frustrating his opponent. Though noted as the worst swordsman in comparison to his fellows, Jack adequately defends himself as both he and Barbossa alternatively shift from their skeletal forms to flesh and blood beings.
#5: Maximus vs. Commodus
«Gladiátor» (2000)
Even before this “Gladiator” fight begins, the odds are stacked against Maximus Decimus Meridius. For his opponent, Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, has already stabbed the paradoxically merciful gladiator, played by Russell Crowe, in the side. Though Maximus is weakened, he’s not beaten, and the two engage in a duel to the death surrounded by Commodus’ Imperial guard. Despite his injury, Maximus fights with a desperate energy to free Rome from tyranny, ultimately succeeding with a strategic throat stab.
#4: Rob Roy MacGregor vs. Archibald Cunningham
“Rob Roy” (1995)
Starring acting heavy weights Tim Roth as maniac aristocrat Archibald Cunningham and Liam Neeson as Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor, this adventure film focuses on how far one man will go to protect his family. The duel between Cunningham and Roy is a revenge match of grand proportions. Armed with a small rapier, Cunningham slowly shreds Roy’s torso until Roy overpowers him with brute strength and triumphs with a well timed fatal slash.
#3: Inigo Montoya vs. the Dread Pirate Roberts
Princezna nevěsta (1987)
Expertly choreographed and wonderfully entertaining, this fight from “The Princess Bride” combines wit, civility, intelligence and skill for a treat suitable for the entire family. This particular duel between master fencer Inigo and Westley-as-Dread-Pirate-Roberts is the epitome of a fair fight as each competitor casually demonstrates his knowledge of fencing terms and the corresponding attacks or defenses associated with them. The athleticism involved is also impressive and lends a lighthearted tone to the overall serious connotation of a duel.
#2: The Bride vs. the Crazy 88
«Kill Bill: Vol. 1” (2003)
You know something’s about to go down when the fight scene opens with one woman, already covered in blood, surrounded by a gaggle of individuals in black suits; it just screams action. In true Tarantino style, there is no lack of blood, guts or gore. But what really makes this fight so epic is female powerhouse Uma Thurman, who makes quick work of her assailants with only one samurai sword as feel-good tunes play on in the background.
