Top 10 Supervillain Portrayals in Movies
They captivate audiences with their plans to disrupt society and destroy the world. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 movie supervillain portrayals.
For this list, we’re focusing on the performances of the actors’ portraying these supervillains, and not the characters themselves. We’ve tried to keep some variety over the different franchises; otherwise it’d just be a list of the best Batman supervillains.
#10: Danny DeVito as The Penguin
«Batman se vrací» (1992)
DeVito delivers something Burgess Meredith’s quacking, pie-throwing Penguin never could: real scares. His version of Batman’s nemesis is a self-loathing cave dweller with a murderous disposition, and the intention to kidnap and murder Gotham’s children. Delivered through black, clenched teeth, this plan is a brilliant display of simultaneous madness, genius, and pity. Plus, his PR campaign to undermine Batman reveals that the Penguin’s mind is his deadliest asset.
#9: Samuel L. Jackson as Mr. Glass
«Nerozbitný» (2000)
Are villains made, or born? In the case of Mr. Glass, it’s a bit of both. With a condition that renders his bones easily broken, the comic book-obsessed Glass becomes a supervillain, and sets out to find his arch-nemesis, an unbreakable hero. With Jackson’s intelligent, bitter and unlikeable portrayal leading the charge, director M. Night Shyamalan delivers a trademark twist, revealing how far Glass went to meet his match.
#8: Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor
“Superman I & II” (1978-80)
Superman’s archrival Lex Luthor is a megalomaniac with a plan to kill millions and increase his wealth. And Hackman’s portrayal of Luthor as a calculated, callous businessman contrasts perfectly with the earnest goodness of Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Equal parts genius and villain, Hackman’s smarmy Luthor set the standard for what other actors would try – and arguably fail – to bring to the character in later incarnations.
#7: Hugo Weaving as Red Skull
„Kapitán Amerika: První Avenger“ (2011)
Malicious, power-hungry and eyeing world domination, Johann Schmidt – a.k.a. Red Skull – is the Nazi head of the criminal syndicate HYDRA, and it’s hard to imagine a more perfect fit for the role than this. Schmidt’s unveiling as the Red Skull shocks, thanks in no small part to Weaving’s expressive take on the character. Injected with the same super-soldier serum as Cap, this is one villain you wouldn’t wanna meet face-to-skull.
#6: Tom Hardy as Bane
Temný rytíř povstal (2012)
Bane is one of those larger-than-life villains that fills the screen and steals every scene he’s in. His croaking, elite British accent contrasts wonderfully with his brute strength and menacing mask. However, what makes Tom Hardy’s Bane so sinister isn’t just his muscular power: he’s also a brilliant demagogue, a self-styled revolutionary, an anarchist – and a calculated terrorist who wants to watch Gotham crumble.
#5: Terence Stamp as General Zod
“Superman I & II” (1978-80)
Contrasting Lex Luthor’s hunger for money, Zod is obsessed with power – and Stamp superbly portrays this Kryptonian supervillain’s arrogance and mercilessness. When he learns that Superman is the son of his sworn enemy, he decides on murder as his means of revenge. General Zod is terrifying even in his quietness, which quickly turns to outbursts of anger when provoked – and provoking Superman’s physical match is a recipe for disaster.
#4: Tom Hiddleston as Loki
“Thor” (2011), “The Avengers” (2012)
The emotional and neurotic Loki, of Marvel Comics fame, is brought to the big-screen by the inimitable Hiddleston, who portrays the character in all his off-kilter glory. Loki is the epitome of a fun-to-watch villain: hilarious, threatening, crazy, and power-hungry, his eloquent speeches offset his ruthlessness. As a god, his contempt for mortals and desire to wreak chaos make Loki an impressive supervillain – one who’s simply irresistible to watch.
#3: Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus
«Spider-Man 2» (2004)
The best movie of the “Spider-Man” series gets the most menacing villain. Fueled by the fury of losing his wife in the failed experiment that fused robotic arms to his spine, Doc Ock is a mentally unstable beast. In a bid to gain the tritium he needs to level the city, his dark sarcasm and disregard for human life show him as the truly horrific monster he is.
#2: Ian McKellen as Magneto
“X-Men” franchise (2000-)
The most frightening villains seem human, but hide something more sinister. Shaped by the atrocities of WWII, Magneto’s contempt for humanity is fully meted out in his war against non-mutants. McKellen brings classiness and substance to the role of the man who’s out to destroy humankind. Though that’s an unsettling metaphor for the real world, Magneto isn’t just scary as a metaphor – every moment he’s onscreen is nerve-wracking.
#1: Heath Ledger as The Joker
«Temný rytíř» (2008)
While Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker focused on the character’s comical demeanor, we’re going with Heath Ledger’s darker and more sadistic performance in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” This murderous psychopath destroys for one reason and one reason alone: he enjoys it. Killing on the small scale or wreaking havoc on the large, he loves playing sick jokes on Gotham. As for the man standing in his way? The Joker’s wry wit and lack of empathy make this incarnation of Batman’s famous nemesis the best ever.

7 Best Supervillains In Superhero Movies
These are the best (and worst) supervillains ever seen in superhero movies.
By Douglas Helm | Published 8 months ago
Superhero movies would be pretty boring if we just watched them saving cats from trees and people from burning buildings. Superheroes need something that poses a threat, forces them to confront their values, and pushes them to their limit — aka a supervillain. Hollywood has given us plenty of these super foes, but these are our picks for the best supervillains in superhero movies of all time:
7. Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan)
What if the villain is right? If you’re asking yourself that question, you know that you’re watching a well-written and effective supervillain. Perhaps no villain on this list encapsulates that more than Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger. Although he is a Wakandan by blood, Killmonger was born and raised in America. Thus, he has nothing but righteous fury for his home country that ignored the oppression of black people in America for centuries.
While Killmonger’s methods may be questionable, it’s hard to disagree with his core goals. His case is even convincing enough to get the Wakandans to reveal their country to the world. Anchored by a rock-solid script and an engrossing performance from Michael B. Jordan, it’s easy to see why many consider Killmonger one of Marvel’s best supervillains.
6. Magneto (Ian McKellen)
You may notice that the best supervillains having understandable motivations are a running theme on this list. While a villain being evil just for the sake of being evil can be compelling, it’s a lot more memorable when you can understand the villain. This is why Ian McKellen’s Magneto makes this list too.
Magneto is no stranger to the horrors of oppression and prejudice as a Holocaust survivor, which is why he fights to protect mutants from humanity’s cruelty. His fight is especially compelling as his friend Charles Xavier fights the same battle with a different approach. As expected, McKellen imbues the character with the appropriate amount of menace and gravitas to create a truly iconic on-screen villain.
5. Ozymandias (Matthew Goode)
Zack Snyder hlídači may have been slavishly faithful to the source material to a fault, but that devotion meant that the film got a lot of things right. While it’s far from a perfect adaptation, it’s hard to deny the casting and characterization of Alan Moore’s characters weren’t accurate, particularly in the case of the genius and grandiose Ozymandias.
Ozymandias also has a unique leg up on the other best supervillains on this list — he won. By the time the Watchmen arrive to stop Ozymandias, he has already enacted his grand plan. Ozymandias was literally always one step ahead of his fellow Watchmen, and Matthew Goode perfectly brought this calculating character to life.
4. Loki (Tom Hiddleston)
As Harvey Dent would say, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain,” but what if the opposite happens? Loki was instantly one of the best supervillains in the MCU when he was first introduced in Thor, and now he’s been around so long that he’s now more hero than villain.
Of course, villain Loki was amazing while we had him. Thanks to Tom Hiddleston’s mischievous and grandiose performance, the character was often the best part of whatever movie he was in. Marvel didn’t let a good thing go, and now we have an entire Disney+ series focused on Loki and a second season on the way.
3. Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe)
It’s not often that an all-time-great supervillain can be brought back nearly 20 years later and be just effective as his debut. But that’s exactly what happened with Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Old Gobby managed to menace not just one, but two different Spider-Men and make their lives absolutely miserable.
Arguably, Willem Dafoe’s double-duty performance as the desperate Norman and the unhinged Green Goblin was the best part of every Spider-Man movie he was in. While we likely won’t be seeing him reprise the character again, his two appearances in superhero films were more than enough to cement him as one of the best supervillains of all time.
2. Thanos (Josh Brolin)
We had only had the briefest glimpse of Thanos leading up to Mstitelé: nekonečná válka, and then in his first scene, he has defeated a ship of Asgardians, including Thor, and he beats Hulk so hard that the big angry monster refuses to come out for the rest of the film. It was a chilling way to show us that this is by far the biggest threat we’ve seen in the MCU yet.
Years of build-up and careful world-building somehow managed to live up to all of the hype with Mstitelé: nekonečná válka a Mstitelé: Endgame. It’s a level of hype that the MCU hasn’t been able to recreate since, and Josh Brolin‘s Thanos was a huge part of it. It’s almost enough to make him the best supervillain in movies of all time if it weren’t for the top pick on our list.
1. The Joker (Heath Ledger)
The Joker is arguably the greatest comic book supervillain of all time, and Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Clown Prince of Crime rightly takes the top spot on this list. Ledger’s performance kept viewers on the edge of their seats every time he was on screen.
The Joker’s plans constantly put Christian Bale’s Batman on his heels. The Joker managed to personify chaos while always being one step ahead of the world’s greatest detective. And Heath Ledger gave the performance of a lifetime in his final, and arguably best role. No villain has stolen as many scenes and enraptured audiences quite like Ledger did since, which is why he’s the best supervillain of all time.
Superhero Movies Where The Supervillain Actually Won (But No One Noticed)
No matter how much hardship our superheroes have to face, at the end of the day, they win. That is how we see superhero movies. That is why they are considered heroes and those against them are villains. Superheroes are meant to save the day by defeating the villains. But sometimes supervillains do not actually lose. Though it is not what we expect, it does happen. In the most subtle way possible. It is done in a way that makes it all believable. Here are a few times when Supevillains won in Superhero movies and no one noticed.
The Joker won in Dark Knight
The only thing Joker ever wanted was to watch the world burn. And that the people of Gotham city lose hope. And that is what he got. The Dark Knight is remembered as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. And the portrayal of Joker by Heath Ledger even won an Academy Award. Though the Jester King of Gotham was captured in the end, he got what he wanted. He turned the White Knight of Gotham, Harvey Dent, into an irredeemable villain. Also, Batman had to take the blame for his murder. Gotham city was never the same again.
Surtur actually won in Thor: Ragnarok
Ragnarok meant the destruction of Asgard, and that is what happened at the end of the movie. Though it was done as a measure to defeat Hela and save the people of the planet from her tyrant rule. Surtur’s crown was in Odin’s Vault and could be used to summon him. When Hela wreaks havoc and Thor’s powers aren’t enough to beat her, they devise a plan, that is Ragnarok. And as Surtur is the one who is prophesied to do it, Loki summons him. This helps them kill Hela but it also destroys the planet, not even a small piece of it is left to save. Exactly like Surtur wanted.
HYDRA won in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
You might be wondering how exactly did that happen. From the very beginning of the movie, it has been obvious that S.H.I.E.L.D. was keeping secrets from Captain America. So he, along with Black Widow, goes on hunting for answers themselves. This leads to them finding out that HYDRA has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and is going to use their helicarriers to kill potential threats. This leads to a battle. Though Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon manage to defeat them and fail their plan, HYDRA gets its revenge on S.H.I.E.L.D. Because of the infiltration, they end up losing a lot of members and it is also disbanded at the end of the film.
Loki got what he wanted in Thor: The Dark World
In all Thor movies, it is, in some way, Loki’s fault. In Thor: The Dark World, Loki is locked up in Asgard’s prison for his actions in The Avengers movie. But after the death of their mother Friga, who was killed by the Dark Elf Kurse, the two brothers team up. They have to stop the Dark Elves from fulfilling their plan and save the order of the nine realms. And prevent Malekeith from using Aether. Thor succeeds to do so, but Loki ends up dying. But in reality, he was faking it. He goes back to Asgard, gets rid of Odin, and disguises as Odin himself to rule the planet. And no one even notices.

Zemo won in Captain America: Civil War
The key cause of everything that transpired in the superhero movie was Zemo. He was the one who caused the blast at the UN building and presented it to be no other than Winter Soldier or Bucky Barnes. Helmut Zemo was a Sokovian who lost his family due to the menace caused by Ultron and the Avengers in Age of Ultron. So to get his revenge he devises a plan to destroy the Avengers. And that is what he got. The Avengers ended up splitting up. He made Captain America and Iron Man go against each other and fight like ruthless enemies.
