Movies about Superhuman speed
For those who have been following the headline-making arrests and various accusations of abuse against Ezra Miller, «The Flash» is the final piece in the years-long puzzle of what will happen to the titular superhero and his first dedicated feature film. As it turns out, not much. Warner Bros Discovery, who owns DC Comics, chose not to reshoot the film with another lead, a pricey and time-consuming avenue some of Miller’s outspoken critics have been rallying for. Despite having a low profile in the film’s publicity strategy leading up to its release, Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, walked the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere this week, thanking studio heads and director Andy Muschietti for their «grace and discernment and care in the context of my life and in bringing this moment actually to fruition.» Putting that giant, controversial elephant aside (but also writing it into the script when Miller makes a wink-and-smile comment about how the Justice League doesn’t do enough for their member’s mental health), «The Flash» is exactly what one might expect from the self-proclaimed «janitor of superheroes,» a title that truly applies to this installment of the speedy protagonist. He isn’t so much cleaning up after other people as he is cleaning up after himself. A bumbling, self-deprecating, self-conscious Joe Schmoe-type with superhuman speed, Barry Allen (Miller) opens the film by saving a rainstorm of newborn babies and their protective nurse who were locked inside the top floor of a crumbling building. With unmatched speed, agility and, always humor, Barry successfully saves his target, and the sequence is a killer way to open the film, setting the tone for the film in which the Flash gets the job done just barely in time or by the skin of his red spandex’d teeth. Though most feature debuts for a comic book character like to conventionally lay out their origin story, «The Flash» has other plans. Time travel and the metaverse are hot concepts these days — we’ve reviewed at least three superhero movies in the past 12 months that featured theories of quantum physics — and «The Flash» seeks, once again, to monopolize on this. On the heels of his father’s upcoming court date, Barry is desperately looking for new evidence to overturn his wrongful conviction for his mother’s murder decades ago. Emotional and frustrated, Barry attempts to run away from his sadness, but instead, he moves back in time, prompting an ethical fork in the road: ignore this newfound ability or use it to save his mother, free his father and give himself the family he’d always dreamed of. With big powers come big responsibility, and Barry’s blundering, rash decision-making forces a fracture in his destiny. After he time travels back to save his mother, the butterfly effect won’t allow him to return to his time that easily. A mysterious time goblin pushes him into his past, where he returns home to not only his mom and dad, but himself as a college intern on the exact day he was struck by lightning in a lab full of chemicals that generated his powers. As old Barry tries to teach new Barry how to be the Flash, another problem arises: old Barry loses his powers when he, too, is struck by the prophetic lightning. General Zod’s invasion of Earth, which was supposed to be thwarted by Superman, continues as planned because Superman never made it in this universe. Barry enlists the help of Keaton’s Batman, a bearded hermit hiding away in his decrepit mansion, to retrieve a Kryptonian Super-person held captive in a secret foreign bunker in order to defeat Zod and save the earth. znovu. It may be a round-about origin story, but it gets the job done with unusual bravado and a distinct style that vibes with Miller’s version of the Flash. There is certainly no condoning his off-screen offenses, but as director Muschietti has said, «there [isn’t] anyone that can play that character as well as they did.» And, unfortunately, or fortunately, or wherever you rest on the gray matter of Miller’s deeds this past year and a half, he’s right. Miller is very good at being Barry Allen. And not just one Barry Allen, but, in this film, two. He has double the screen time and double the characters to flesh out, all while fighting for viewers’ attention against the likes of Ben Affleck’s Batman (eh) and Michael Keaton’s Batman (woah). There’s also the debut appearance of Super Girl (Sasha Calle) to contend with and the one-note, non-villain villain, Superman’s nemesis General Zod, who is only remotely interesting because it’s Michael Shannon beneath the Kryptonian war suit. Viewers who expect, nay demand, an epic battle sequence and a rival foe who instills terror throughout the film will be sorely disappointed by «The Flash.» The antagonist is not General Zod but Barry himself, an awkward genius fixated on fixing the past without any sense of how it may destroy every universe in existence. There’s a metaphor buried there for Miller, who has also been at the mercy of his own self-sabotaging malfeasance, but we aren’t interested in diving too deeply into that. For now, «The Flash» has the potential to revitalize DC Comics after a tough year that saw «Black Adam» and the «Shazam» sequel completely flop, critically and commercially.
«The Flash» is in theaters now.

The «superhuman speed» special effect in movies and television
«Trip to the Moon» didn’t use special effects like those in the question. Earliest I can think of is the Road Runner cartoons 1949.

i was thinking about the road runner too.

In terms of live-action, the Six Million Dollar Man (starting in 1973) used a combination of slow-motion and a very famous «sha-na-na-na» sound effect to indicate that he was moving incredibly fast. It’s gone on to be a bit of a trope, and has been parodied many times.

I’m tempted to vote as «off topic». It seems like you’re asking about the use of the ‘motion-blur’ effect (in film) rather than about science fiction or fantasy/

@Richard This question might be a good fit for Movies/TV SE for that reason, but it fits here too because OP isn’t just asking about motion blur, he’s asking about the wide range of effects used to represent super-speed, which is by its nature a sci-fi/fantasy trope. It’s a «behind the scenes» question, not in-universe, but so are all of these. Definitely not off-topic.

Tiresome, generic spoof is all about crude humor.
