Podzemí (1928)

Many feature films have included sequences shot on London’s famous underground railway but this 1928 production by talented young prodigy Anthony Asquith was the first. The tube had been an integral part of London life for well over half a century by this time and the first thing you notice about the film is how incredibly familiar the scenes filmed on the underground feel. All our favourite protocols (giving up seats, reading over people’s shoulders, invasion of body space) and other tube-specific behaviour are exhibited here.
The story – told in beautifully spare, elegant filmmaking language with the odd experimental flourish – concerns the convoluted love lives of four young Londoners and culminates in a thrilling chase over the roof of the Lots Road power station.

Bulldog Jack (1935)
Režie: Walter Forde
The underground provides the backdrop for the thrilling climax to this fast-paced comedy-thriller variation on Sapper’s thick-ear Bulldog Drummond adventures. Jack Pennington (Jack Hulbert) steps into Drummond’s shoes when the latter is injured in a car accident and crosses swords with master criminal Morelle (Ralph Richardson on maniacally splendid form), who’s intent on stealing some jewels from the British Museum.
Our hero tracks Morelle down to his hide-out in the disused (and fictional) tube station of Bloomsbury (an idea based on Brompton Road Station having been recently closed in 1934), leading to a frenetic chase on a runaway tube train.
Christmas under Fire (1941)
Director: Harry Watt
Few scenes in this Ministry of Information short could be more poignant or better capture the spirit of British fortitude in the face of adversity than those showing the capital’s citizens sheltering overnight in London underground stations during the Blitz. Makeshift coat pegs line the tube tunnel walls as all around families lie on platforms with blankets and battered suitcases, with an occasional Christmas tree, trimmed and bedecked with tinsel, serving as a reminder that this is the traditional season of peace and goodwill.
Passport to Pimlico (1949)
Director: Henry Cornelius
When the residents of Miramont Place, Pimlico discover that they are in fact subjects of the ancient Duchy of Burgundy, they decide to escape the rationing and privation of post-war Britain by declaring themselves foreigners.
In one of the film’s funniest scenes, they flag down and board tube trains to impose document and custom checks on the bemused passengers. While one tourist is delighted to have his passport stamped ‘Pemberton’s Stores – Received with Thanks’, most of the travellers are hostile to the intrusion, particularly when asked if they are carrying any “muskrats, mealworms, motorcycles, hashish, prepared opium or agricultural machinery.” The scene descends into chaos when a magician, asked if he has any livestock, releases a suitcase full of doves into the already overcrowded carriage.
Under Night Streets (1958)
Director: Ralph Keene
Circa 1958, British Transport Films ( BTF ) was the classiest industrial film production unit in the world. Among nationalised transport concerns, London Transport ( LT ) came second, after British Rail, on BTF ’s client list. And London Underground sat atop the pyramid of LT ’s operations…
Enter Under Night Streets: an elegant middle-of-the-track study of four hours of overnight fluffing, mending and reconditioning of tube lines by over 1000 staff. Skilfully compressed into 20 minutes by documentary veteran Ralph Keene, it’s a mini-masterpiece of transport filmmaking, as stylish but stately, self-respectful and proficient, as LT ’s nameless nocturnal employees.
Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966)
Director: Gordon Flemyng
The Dalek invasion has left London a bombed-out shell, not unlike the post-Blitz scenes of the Second World War. The survivors have formed a resistance and set up their headquarters in a secret room in the depths of Embankment underground station, the entrance hidden behind a poster warning of the dangers of drinking rainwater. There they prepare weapons to fight the ‘motorised dustbins’ patrolling the streets.
Although much of the film is studio-bound, there are some evocative shots of London, including the sight of a Dalek emerging from the Thames – the moment when Dr Who realises that he’s facing his greatest nemesis.
Death Line (1972)
Director: Gary Sherman
The underground, with its labyrinth of tunnels and disused stations, is a prime location for a horror film and Death Line makes great use of the creepy setting. In an abandoned station between Russell Square and Holborn, the descendants of railway tunnellers trapped by a roof collapse in 1892 have lived and bred, feeding on unsuspecting passengers.
Now only one of the troglodytes survives and, diseased and pustulent, he goes in search of a new mate to continue the line. Sickness and interbreeding have reduced him to little more than an inhuman creature; the only phrase he can utter is the one which he has heard echoing through the warren of tunnels over the years: “Mind the doors!”
Hidden City (1987)
Director: Stephen Poliakoff
In Stephen Poliakoff’s directorial debut, visitors to underground London are taken on a trip to the past as disused stations and bunkers house archives of secret documents and films.
Academic James (Charles Dance) is persuaded by the enigmatic Sharon (Cassie Stuart) to look for clues to a film-related mystery in the Kingsway tram tunnel and in a deep level shelter under Tottenham Court Road which was used by Eisenhower during the Second World War. Hidden City serves as a reminder of the history that is tucked away in the real parts of the underground that are no longer used for transport.

Forget God, it’s the London underground that determines destiny in Peter Howitt’s smart romantic comedy. Two different realities unfold for Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow), depending on whether or not she catches her tube (the underground scenes were shot at Waterloo and Fulham Broadway stations). In one alternate universe she returns home to discover her boyfriend’s infidelity, in the other she carries on oblivious.
Like Muriel’s Wedding (1994), Sliding Doors is misremembered as a lightweight date movie, but its themes of relationship breakdown, miscarriage and death add a pleasing counterpoint to the froth, and its nifty gimmick, reminiscent of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays, works very well.
Skyfall(2012)

“Welcome to the London rush hour,” the new head of Q Branch teases agent 007 (Daniel Craig) during a tense pursuit on the underground. “Not something you’d know much about.” It’s true that James Bond is more commonly found in high-class casinos or in exotic locales, but for this 50th anniversary entry in the spy series director Sam Mendes brought Bond home to London for much of the action.
Pursuing escaped cyber-terrorist Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) from MI6 ’s subterranean HQ , Bond tunnels out onto the platform at Temple tube, where his progress is thwarted by a swarming metropolitan throng. Seeing Silva board a westward-bound Circle line train, 007 goes one better than the most time-pushed commuter, leaping over the electrified tracks onto the rear of the rapidly departing carriage.

Chud (1984, režie Douglas Cheek)

Nemůžete mluvit o podzemních hororových filmech, aniž byste nezmínili šokujícího Neila Marshalla, Descent. Zatímco film je plný monster, neživý, klaustrofobii vyvolávající jeskynní systém je možná tím nejděsivějším antagonistou. Poháněný silnými výkony převážně ženského obsazení a scénářem plným skutečného dramatu, Descent je film, který vás potrápí a nechá otřesený. Pokračování už tolik ne!
Jeskyně (2005, režie Bruce Hunt)
Na papíře Bruce Hunt Jeskyně vypadá hodně jako Neil Marshall Descent. Oba filmy se soustředí na skupiny neohrožených speleologů, kteří se hluboko pod zemí setkají s něčím nelidským. Co nastaví Jeskyně Kromě toho, že tito průzkumníci nejsou jen pod zemí, ale jsou pod vodou, přidává další vrstvu hrůzy! Kromě teroru ze stvoření a intenzivní klaustrofobie, postavy ve Jeskyně se také musí obávat, že dojde kyslík. Ignorujte prosím 12% skóre filmu Rotten Tomatoes. Je to opravdu vzrušující, drásavý hororový zážitek, který si zaslouží váš čas.
Jak nahoře, tak dole (2014, režie John Erick Dowdle)
Film odehrávající se v nechvalně proslulých podzemních katakombách Paříže? Neodolatelné pro tohoto konkrétního hororového fanouška! A co víc, John Erick Dowdle Jak nahoře, tak dole a Hlubší než peklo oba používají Dante’s Peklo jako paralelní alegorie. A přitom je to stejně klaustrofobické a závratné jako Descent a Jeskyně, existuje duchovní/nadpřirozený aspekt Jak nahoře, tak dole to ho řadí do vlastní ligy. Je to film, který těží z mnoha zhlédnutí a rozhodně ovlivnil náladu a estetiku mého debutového románu.
hajzl (2005, režie Christopher Smith)
Ne, ne ten found-footage horor režiséra Patricka Brice s Markem Duplassem v hlavní roli (mimochodem skvělý film). Mluvím o roce 2005 hajzl, režie Christopher Smith (Severance, Trojúhelník, Černá smrt). hajzl je krvavá směs slasherů a tropů s kreaturami, která se odehrává v labyrintových tunelech londýnského metra. Miluji představu nepředstavitelných hororů číhajících hned za dobře osvětlenými platformami. hajzlScénář je napjatý společenskými komentáři (konkrétně pojednávajícími o bezdomovectví), postavy jsou propracované a uvěřitelné a hlavní antagonista je neznepokojující. hajzl nikdy nedostal rekvizity, které si zasloužil, takže se co nejdříve podívejte na tento nedoceněný podzemní klenot!
Půlnoční masový vlak (2008, režie Ryuhei Kitamura)
Velký vliv na to měl Clive Barker Hlubší než peklo. Ve skutečnosti se kapitola 3 soustředí na podzemní kult „skutečných cenobitů“. Ale protože Hellraiser filmy se neodehrávají konkrétně v podzemí, včetně Půlnoční masový vlak na tomto seznamu. Půlnoční masový vlak je založen na Barkerově stejnojmenné povídce a režíroval ji Ryuhei Kitamura (Downrange, Kino noční můry). Jako hajzl, odehrává se v systému metra (v tomto případě v New Yorku), ale rychle odbočuje daleko od vyšlapaných cest. I když je hluboce zakořeněn v subžánru slasher, Půlnoční masový vlak se svým závěrem stává absolutně lovecraftovským. Další tragicky nedoceněná liána, Půlnoční masový vlak představuje Bradleyho Coopera (předtím, než byl superstar) s vybranými portréty od Brooke Shields a Teda Raimiho.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2014, režie Dan Trachtenberg)
Jedno z témat, které zkoumám Hlubší než peklo je myšlenka lidí, kteří opouštějí společnost, aby vytvořili nový život pod povrchem, a existuje podmnožina subžánru podzemního hororu, který se tímto konceptem také zabývá. Mluvím o hororu proti bombovému krytu a z této podmnožiny vám mohu doporučit tři filmy. v 10 Cloverfield Lane, Howard (hraje John Goodman) se ze strachu z mimozemské invaze stáhne do luxusního protileteckého krytu. Jeho spolubydlící, Michelle a Emmet (hraní Mary Elizabeth Winsteadovou a Johnem Gallagherem Jr.) si nikdy nejsou 100% jisti, zda mu mají věřit nebo ne – a právě z toho pramení velká část hrůzy filmu: nejistota.
díra (2001, režie Nick Hamm)
Existuje několik hororů tzv díra, aby bylo jasno, mluvím o tom, který vyšel v roce 2001, režíroval Nick Hamm a v hlavní roli hrála Thora Birch. Jako 10 Cloverfield Lane, převážná část tohoto filmu se odehrává v protileteckém krytu. Ale tím podobnosti v podstatě končí. Není v tom nic mimozemského nebo nadpřirozeného díra; film se odvíjí spíše jako drama a záhada. Obsazení je složeno z mladých dospělých, stejně jako mnoho tradičních hororových nabídek. Přesto se filmu daří produkovat hmatatelný děs a klaustrofobii, zatímco zkoumá témata klamu a posedlosti. Další nedoceněný film, na který Čas jakoby zapomněl, rýpnul si do něj díra hned jak se vám to bude hodit.
Divide (2011, režie Xavier Gens)
Třetí hororový film na tomto seznamu, Divide, je nejextrémnější a rozhodně není pro bázlivé. Je to přesně to, co byste očekávali od režiséra Xaviera Gense (Hranice), jeden z architektů subžánru New French Extremity, stylu známého svou brutalitou a nihilismem. Jaderná válka je realitou Dividea sázky pro náhodnou sbírku postav, které se ocitnou v špinavém přístřešku pod newyorským bytovým domem, nemohou být vyšší. Divide v hereckém obsazení hraje s Lauren German, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia a Rosanna Arquette velkou hvězdnou sílu. Ještě pořád, Divide je film, který si zaslouží upozornění na spouštěč a neměli by ho sledovat lidé se slabým srdcem.
Noční plemeno (1990, režie Clive Barker)
Už jsem zmínil, že Clive Barker je jednou z hlavních inspirací Hlubší než peklo, takže se zdálo vhodné uzavřít tento seznam dalším z Mistrových hororů. Režíroval Barker Noční plemeno podle scénáře, který také napsal podle svého románu Cabal. Film se zaměřuje na společnost „příšer“, která žije v podzemí, pod opuštěným hřbitovem ve městě zvaném Midian. 6 Subterranean Horror Movies That Prove You’re Better Off Above Ground
I am a big fan of subterranean horror as a spectator. But the dark, cavernous world beneath the earth’s surface is a dangerous place that is best avoided at all costs. So, for that very reason, I am grateful for the existence of several cautionary tales about the unsavory evils awaiting anyone cavalier enough to venture below ground. Read on for seven subterranean horror films that demonstrate why we are all much safer above the earth’s surface.
Loučení se svobodou
I will be the first to say that Loučení se svobodou is flawed. It suffers from amateur performances from its supporting cast and features characters that aren’t always particularly likable. But in spite of its shortcomings, this tale that sees the attendees of a bachelor party stalked by subterranean cannibals benefits from an eerie and foreboding setting. The abandoned subway tunnels in which the picture unfolds are dark, creepy, and ominous. When I have the occasion to revisit this flick, my desire to stay above ground is reaffirmed.
Jak nahoře, tak dole
This flick, which is set in the Parisian catacombs is tense, atmospheric, and frightening. But anyone familiar with the output of The Brothers Dowdle (John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle) likely knows to expect nothing less from their work. After all, we’re talking about the creative team behind Poughkeepsie pásky, one of the most frighteningly realistic mockumentaries ever committed to film. Jak nahoře, tak dole makes effective use of an eerie setting and delivers a handful of well-timed jump scares. Although, you likely wouldn’t guess that from the film’s abysmal critical reception. But take my word for it, dear reader, this flick will make you think twice before recklessly gallivanting below ground.

Descent
If you think spelunking is for you, I suggest you watch Descent. One look at the monstrous creatures dwelling in the dank caverns beneath your feet will get you back in your right mind. Director Neil Marshall went all out with this flick, going to great lengths to detail the unspeakable evil that lurks below the surface. In addition to featuring horrifying, pint-sized monsters, the film also makes effective use of claustrophobic settings and pits the talented cast against a nonstop barrage of terror that never lets up long enough for the audience to catch their breath.

And here we are with another admonition regarding the various ways in which evil can manifest itself via the subway. This flick sees a young photographer lured into the dangerous world of subterranean homicide in an attempt to elevate his creative output. Projekt Půlnoční masový vlak is a beautifully photographed, thrilling film that is brimming with brutality. This Clive Barker adaptation is as chilling as it is useful at illustrating why one should consider riding a bike, taking a bus, or even piloting an automobile before daring to trifle with the subway system.

If you have the sudden urge to explore a dangerous hole in the ground, stop! And then pause to rethink that dangerous notion. I can assure you the British teens in this subterranean horror film wish someone would have warned them before they holed up in an underground bunker. If I haven’t yet succeeded in persuading you to stay above ground, the horrors of this 2002 shocker will likely do the trick. Contained within are unstable teens, bad language, and conflicting accounts of exactly how the harrowing underground ordeal unfolded. If you’re on the fence about the dangers lurking beneath your feet, make haste to watch this intense and often unpredictable cautionary tale.
Katakomby
I am well aware that this film doesn’t have much of a fanbase. And I concede that it isn’t fine art or even a great movie. But with that said, I would argue that Katakomby makes good use of an inherently frightening setting. Moreover, there are at least a few legitimately creepy sequences contained within. So, if you don’t go in expecting to have your socks knocked off, you may just find this tale of subterranean horror. It also features popstar P!NK in a starring role, which isn’t a total bust. At the very least, I hope it encourages you to stay above ground for your own safety.
