Movies about Stillborn child
Dokument Still Loved odkrývá příběhy lásky, naděje a odvahy.
Three years in the making, the film begins with a candle-lit vigil on International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day commemorating these children, attended by the parents and siblings who have experienced the tragedy of stillbirth. Comprising interviews that expose the emptiness and loneliness that these parents felt following their heartbreaking ordeals, director Debbie Howard seeks to offset the deafening silence that characterises their experiences. By doing so, she reveals a shocking negligence of support both professionally and personally over a topic stigmatised by what the stiff upper-lip’s of this world dub embarrassing emotionality.
Still Loved demonstrates that the physical loss of a baby is not considered in conjunction with the mental support these parents urgently need in order to cope with the passing of a child they’d created, developed a relationship with, and who had died in the hours it was anticipated that he or she would be welcomed into the world. More than a lack of closure, there is a distinct lack of compassion for the unexpected and often sudden news that their baby won’t survive, even down to definitions. One woman’s birth was signed off as an abortion, another as a stillbirth when medical negligence was the true culprit.

The movie centers around Martha and Sean, a couple from Boston in the US, on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy. Thus begins a year long odyssey for Martha (Vanessa Kirby), who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court.
Pieces Of A Woman is a tough watch, especially for anyone who has been personally affected by the death of a baby, so I am delighted that Netflix and Vanessa worked with Sands ahead of the film’s release to ensure that anyone affected by the issues portrayed in the story will be able to access support. In these challenging times when bereaved families need support more than ever, we are doing all we can to ensure Sands is here to respond to anyone who needs us.

Netflix’s new movie, Pieces of a Woman, is a powerful tribute to the extreme grief of baby loss
Jsou tam dramatické scény a pak začíná film s 20 minutovou porodní scénou. Přesně to je nový film Netflixu, Kousky ženy, dělá to, co nás staví do oka bouře, když těhotná Martha – kterou hraje vítězka BAFTA Vanessa Kirby – rodí ve svém bostonském domě.
As the planned home birth ensues, her husband Sean (Shia LaBeouf) calls for a midwife. The midwife who arrives appears to become increasingly erratic and as the birth moves from one room to another — from the living room to the bathtub to the bedroom, the baby increasingly comes under stress. The situation becomes punctuated by Martha’s screams of anguish and extreme pain cutting through you like a knife.
As the birth ends, we cut to joining Martha, a walking zombie, as she returns to ‘everyday’ life. We see her greeted by her co-workers with trepidation, walking through a mall inspecting children’s clothes, participating in the mundane activity of food shopping and refusing sex from her husband. These everyday activities and actions illustrate that with every step Martha takes, a piece of her falls away.
As legal action over the home birth ensues — with the midwife becoming a pariah in the media — the relationship with her mother also begins to break down as they battle over the ‘right way’ to grieve. Her mother becomes so obsessed with getting justice whilst Martha just wishes to retreat.

Srdcem tohoto pozoruhodně silného filmu je srdcervoucí výkon Vanessy Kirby. Bývalá hvězda Crown took considerable time to meet women who have suffered and grieved for the loss of a baby to prepare for the role and the research shows. In the expert hands of Vanessa, their traumas are brought to the screen in a touching tribute to their loss and Vanessa does their stories justice, giving them a platform that they are so rarely given.
Speaking about the role last year after she finished filming, Vanessa spoke to GLAMOUR UK about how the role affected her own mental health saying that leaning on her friends helped her through. «That’s the best form of wellbeing you can ever have, really,» she said. «I felt absolutely sh*t after that shoot because you have to go to dark places for 10 hours a day.» Thankfully, however, Vanessa went to this place to portray something that is rarely vividly seen on screen and for that alone Vanessa should be applauded.
Ultimately whilst Vanessa’s performance is a tour de force of emotion, it is a reminder of the power of human survival in times of unimaginable grief. For this the academy should pass Vanessa Kirby the Best Leading Actress Oscar right now.
