Movies about Self made man
This is a moving story of a man, a self made man, as told by his daughter. Powerful, funny, and brutally honest, it follows the last days of Bob Stern, a man who tries to decide whether he should take his own life following the diagnosis of terminal cancer. But before he makes up his mind, he decides to talk through the issue with his daughters, by way of a video message. Using clips from the recorded session, Susan Stern weaves the impressive story of Bob Stern’s life in with the equally riveting story of his death. The most fascinating aspect of this film is how the story tells itself, and the overwhelming sense of reality that it conveys to the audience. A fantastic take on an important social issue that impacts so many families.

[Last updated April 2nd, 2021]
#1. Pursuit of Happyness
Založený na skutečném příběhu.
If you want something. Go get it. Period!
[My favorite true story entrepreneur movie]
We placed this movie at the top of our movies for entrepreneurs list for good reason.
This is a real-life story of a man who believes so badly in a product that he can’t sell that he ends up losing his house, his wife, and his money, being left with just himself and his son. He was beaten up, he was down, but he didn’t give up!
It’s the steps he takes after this happened to him that really shaped him into the success he became.
Against all odds, he takes an unpaid internship to become a stockbroker, fighting for a single job at the end of it.
This is a powerful true story that sticks with you as you face your own personal struggles in business.
#2. Joy
This is our favorite movie about success and money.
2015 film Radost was loosely based on the life of Joy Mangano, a divorced mother of two, who rises against all odds and sets up a successful business empire.
In true rags-to-riches style, her gift to the world is the self-wringing Miracle Mop.
Joy Mangano like all great entrepreneurs understood that the best way to make money was to solve PROBLEMS. And the Miracle Mop solved a huge problem!
Facing betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence, and the scars of love, Joy becomes a true boss of both family and enterprise in a world of unforgiving commerce.
Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.
Forget any critical reviews – if you are an entrepreneur you will enjoy this movie.
Poznámka: Joy Mangano was the president of Ingenious Designs, LLC, and appeared regularly on the US Home Shopping Network (HSN) until her departure in late 2018.
While Joy Mangano is famously known for her first product: the Miracle Mop, she holds more than 100 patents for her inventions, including Huggable Hangers, the best-selling product in Home Shopping Network history.
Dear Entrepreneur
Are you looking for the “secret sauce” that takes your written communication and business blogging to the next level?
(and utilizes your intelligence, education, and critical-thinking skills better)
Making your website the authority website in your niche.
There is no better. No BS.
Just the facts and a roadmap THAT WORKS.
#3. Wall Street
Perhaps the best-known movie about success and money.
Every dream has its price.
A 1987 movie about a young stockbroker (Bud Fox) who is desperate to succeed and becomes involved with his hero, a wealthy, unscrupulous corporate raider. (Gordon Gekko)
Bud Fox will do just about anything it takes to succeed. That for him includes insider trading.
See what happens when the desire to succeed takes over your life and the motto of ‘Greed is good’ directs how you do business.
But what happens when you’re pushed to your limits and asked to do something you can’t or won’t do?
Suddenly everything comes to a head when Fox is asked to help do something, not only illegal but morally reprehensible.
The movie is also famous for its Gordon Gekko quotes such as:
“The most valuable commodity I know of is information.”
“Money never sleeps, pal.”
#4. The Game
There are no rules in The Game.
What do you get the guy who has everything?
Nicholas Van Orton (played by Michael Douglas) is a wealthy San Francisco banker whose life is wrapped up in his business, which has left him somewhat of a loner.
His brother Conrad gives him the gift of a lifetime, which would prove to change his perspective on the world and the way that he’s going to live it.
When bad things start to happen to you, you start to question what’s really important in life, business, success, and money, or actually living?
#5. Boiler Room
Motion creates Emotion!
After entering the stockbroking profession to impress his father, Seth Davis, a Queens College dropout, soon realizes the huge earning potential ahead of him.
But with commissions much larger than any other company, Seth soon learns that not everything is what it’s cracked up to be and he’s forced to face the dilemma of money and greed vs. morals and legality.
For any entrepreneur starting out in business, it’s a very real possibility that you’re going to face moral dilemmas and the way that they’re dealt with in this film is eye-opening.
#6. Jerry Maguire
The rest of his life begins now.
This is a story about a man who’s at the top of his game; a beautiful partner, the biggest clients, lots of respect. But then he decides to step back and question it all and proposes his new thoughts to the rest of the company, which ultimately ends in him losing it all.
Everyone turns his back on him, except for one, very volatile client, Rod Tidwell. From here you see Jerry examine what is really important to his business and life and works towards bringing it all back together again, only this time, the way it should be.
#7. Trading Places
Take two complete strangers, make one of them rich the other poor… just watch the fun while they’re… Trading Places.
What happens when you take the rich and the poor and make them switch places? A social experiment ran by Mortimer and Randolph Duke, brother and owners of a commodities brokerage firm, proves to be very interesting when the switched pair run into each other.
A life-changing event for both of them, poses the question of what’s more important in life, friends and love, or money and power?
#8. The Godfather
An offer you can’t refuse.
One of the greatest films in the world based on the best book I’ve ever read. The Godfather is the story about the growth of a small family business as it becomes the largest organized crime family in New York, fighting off the opposition at any expense.
The Godfather and his son Michael Corleone are the brains behind the family and this film gives you an insight into what it takes to become one of the most powerful family businesses in the country.
#9. Glengarry Glen Ross
Lie. Cheat. Steal. All In A Day’s Work.
In the fast-paced world of Chicago real estate, competition and incentives are what decide who’s the best. That’s why they’re having a little sales competition – First prize is a Cadillac El Dorado, second prize is a set of steak knives, third prize is you’re fired.
With stakes that high and the pressure on, the salesmen show that they’re willing to do anything it takes to succeed in business.
In the video below Blake (Alec Baldwin) makes a speech to the employees of a sales company. Two famous lines from the movie are: “Coffee is for closers only!” a “ Always be closing, always be closing”
#10. Catch Me If You Can
The true story of a real fake.
Again, this is a true story, about a young conman who successfully impersonated an airline pilot, doctor, lawyer, and history professor during his stint as a fraudulent cheque casher.
What’s amazing about this film and the life of Frank Abegnale Jr. is how much he managed to achieve in a much tougher environment and under more stress than most people are used to. Whether it’s legal or not, business is business and Frank was one of the best at what he did.

#11. Wolf of Wall Street
There’s no nobility in poverty.
This is a story of a man who went from nothing to something and something very big at that. It’s an inspirational film for the amount of perseverance Jordan Belfort puts into it, but that’s not what I love the most about this film. This movie does a great job at depicting how business cultures are created in fast-growth companies (minus the corruption seen in this one).
Belfort’s rallying cry of “Don’t take no for an answer” is specific to the mission of his company.
My team and I use the rallying cry “total contact” which means all team members own the solution to any problems brought to their attention — no passing off to somebody else.
#12. Shawshank Redemption
Fear can hold you, prisoner. Hope can set you free.
This is one of the greatest films of all time, and one I’m sure that the majority of readers have seen before, purely because of its undeniable greatness.
It’s the story of a man who manages to succeed in the worst possible conditions imaginable – false imprisonment for the murder of his cheating wife and lover.
From making friends with another con inside the prison, Andy manages to make the best out of a very bad situation and through perseverance manages to achieve more than he ever thought possible.
#13. The Social Network
You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies
This is another story of the young, successful, and intelligent man, only this time, it’s based on a true story of the world’s youngest billionaire – Mark Zuckerberg, the creator, and owner of Facebook.
The story is pretty amazing and has been made famous by this film, he starts off as a Harvard student with a strong streak of arrogance and huge potential, he creates a new social network based upon the most prestigious email address in the country, the Harvard email address.
Zbytek, jak říkají, je historie.
#14. Pirates of Silicon Valley
Good artists copy… Great artists steal.
There are no two bigger names in technology than Microsoft and Apple and this is their story. This is an amusing documentary-style film about their competition and their rise to the enormous companies that they are today.
It’s slightly dated today, and perhaps The Social Network is a little bit more relevant, but it still holds some very valuable information and pointers to learn from. After all, you’ve gotta be a pretty special person to become as powerful as they have become.
#15. Forrest Gump
The story of a lifetime.
This is a simple man with good intentions, who accidentally becomes phenomenally successful from living his life the best way he knows how. He wins medals, becomes a professional ping-pong player, takes up running, owns a huge shrimping company, and inspires people all across the country.
The simple nature of Forrest makes him very appealing to the world as he proves that you don’t have to be a super genius to make something work, you just have to try.
#16. Blow
Založený na skutečném příběhu.
Another great film based on a true story, this time only slightly more illegal than the last, it’s a film based on George Jung and his career as a cocaine dealer.
What started off as a small-time operation working with pot, he is eventually imprisoned and introduced to cocaine and that’s where things start to explode.
He’s rumored to have handled about 85% of all of the supply of cocaine in the 1970s, making him an incredibly powerful and successful man, and this film is all about exactly how he did it.
#17. Office Space
When your hypnotist dies just after they’ve put you in a state of complete bliss, you can’t help but have a refreshing outlook on life.
If there’s ever a film to make you want to get out of a desk job in the corporate world, then this is it.
Peter Gibbons is a man who can’t help but be promoted as he consistently starts to slack off and do things his own way, but trouble starts to arise when his new careless nature starts to lead to him stealing from the company in a much bigger way than he expected.
#18. The Aviator
Some men dream of the future. He built it.
A biopic depicting the early years of director and aviator Howard Hughes’ career from the late 1920s to mid-1940s. It wasn’t the money he made or the time he spent that made him so great, it was the attention to detail and perfection that he strived for that set him apart from his competition.
He faced many obstacles along the way from rival companies and malicious rumors, but nothing stopped him from becoming exactly who he wanted to be. This is one of my favorite movies for entrepreneurs.
#19. Risky Business
There’s a time for playing it safe and a time for Risky Business.
A good story about what you have to do when you take your dad’s Porsche out for a trip and start to realize that you’re going to need a lot of money, which you’re going to have to raise in a very creative way.
With his parents away and responsibility out of the window, Joel starts to realize that it’s not all as easy as he was expecting, having to look after friends and source cash any way he can. An interesting look at what people can come up with when they’re put on the spot to come up with some fast cash.
#20. The Corporation
This film takes a good, long look at what happens when you take a business and you model it to be legally a person – a corporation. What happens though when the sole purpose of this person is to make money for its shareholders though? It starts to act without a conscience which threatens the world, our future, and the people working for it.
This isn’t just a film about evil corporations though, it’s also about what we can do to stop them from taking over everything that we know.
I saw this film in the cinema and it’s worth seeing again.
It’s eye-opening.
#21: Bonus Movie For Entrepreneurs – The Banker
Projekt Bankéř is based on the true story of Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris, two black men, and how they became bankéřů and landowners in the 1950s and 60s. This was at a time when racism made that a nearly impossible thing for African American citizens to do.
This is an incredible movie. Vysoce doporučeno!
To jsou všichni lidé!
21 movies for entrepreneurs you should definitely watch.
Doufáme, že se vám bude líbit.
Perhaps one day Hollywood will make a movie about your entrepreneurial journey.
K vašemu úspěchu!
Want to become a better business owner? Watch these 11 movies
Inspiration and motivation for entrepreneurs can come in a variety of mediums — books, articles, mentors, quotes, and even movies. Personally, I find the most motivational movies to be biopics or those loosely based on real-life people. It’s easier to connect with these characters since they actually experienced the same challenges, failures, and successes that I went through.
Hollywood seems to think the same since they’ve released a steady stream of biopic-type movies over the years, including the following 11 Oscar-nominated films. While this list is not comprehensive, these films happen to my personal favorites whenever I need a dose of inspiration.
1. «The Social Network» (2010)
Nominated for eight Academy Awards, this over-dramatized film follows Mark Zuckerberg’s meteoric rise from a Harvard student to the founder of the world’s most popular social network.
Why watch it? Again, «The Social Network» took some liberties when recounting the founding and success of Facebook. However, it does an excellent job of detailing the obstacles that plenty of startup founder faces: battling with co-founders, lawsuits, and isolation. It also documents the importance of a variety of traits such as being resilient, flexible, delegating, networking, and being receptive to suggestions.
2. «Občan Kane» (1941)
Hands down one of the greatest movies ever made, «Kane» was nominated for an impressive nine Oscars. While not exactly a biography, the main character Charles Foster Kane was based on American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick.
Why watch it? Charles Foster Kane, like most entrepreneurs, has a desire to change the world. In Kane’s situation, he wants to do so with journalism. However, as his wealth and power increases, Kane transforms from a «citizen of the people» to a man only obsessed with his wealth and power. In the end, the only thing that mattered to him was his childhood sled “Rosebud.” The lesson? There’s more to life than just money and power.
3. «Joy» (2015)
Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as Joy Mangano, who was a single mother who invented the Miracle Mop. Through her dedication she became a self-made millionaire who now holds more than 100 patents.
Why watch it? Joy experienced her own challenges, such as family betrayal and a fickle industry. There was even a point when QVC was going to pull the Miracle Mop. However, Joy believed in her product so much that she began pitching it on QVC herself. Her first TV appearance resulted in selling more than 18,000 mops in less than a half an hour. Sometimes it pays off to be your biggest cheerleader.
4. «Rocky» (1976)
Loosely inspired by real-life boxer Chuck Wepner, «Rocky» won three Oscars, including Best Picture. Since it’s release, Rocky Balboa has become one of the most beloved characters in film history — especially in Philly — thanks to the underdog’s grit and determination.
Why watch it? Like Rocky, entrepreneurs are underdogs. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t rise to the challenge. What makes a successful entrepreneur isn’t if they win or los. It’s the fact that they can go toe-to-toe with the champ when everyone else doubts them. Besides, how can you not get amped when listening to Bill Conti’s score?
5. «The Pursuit of Happyness» (2006)
Based on the true story of Chris Gardner, in which Will Smith was nominated for an Oscar for, «The Pursuit of Happyness» follows Gardner’s struggles with homelessness to successful businessman, investor, stockbroker, motivational speaker, author, and philanthropist.
Why watch it? Entrepreneurs most make sacrifices when chasing their dreams. In Gardner’s case, that was raising a son while being homeless. However, Gardner never gave up and persisted. If that doesn’t inspire you, then I don’t know what will.
6. «Moneyball» (2011)
Nominated for six Academy Awards, «Moneyball» recounts the Oakland A’s impressive 2002 season. What made it so inspiring was that the team didn’t have the money to attract top talent. But thanks to outside-of-the-box thinking from general manager Billy Beane, the team won the American League West.
Why watch it? This film demonstrates how entrepreneurs have to be innovative when bootstrapping their business. In other words, you don’t need money in order to make your product better. On top of that, Beane never gave-up on his vision, despite the constant criticism from naysayers.
7. «Tucker: The Man and His Dream» (1998)
This biographical film was nominated for three Oscars and follows Preston Tucker during his attempt to manufacture his 1948 Tucker Sedan, which he dubbed «the car of tomorrow.» Tucker’s design revolutionized safety features, such as a pop out windshield, headlights that swivel when you turn, and seat belts, but faced animosity from the Big Three automobile companies and the authorities. The smear campaign against Tucker and his “car of tomorrow” lead to his company going bankrupt. However, the vehicle, thanks in part to this film, is now admired — and highly collectible.
Why watch it? Preston Tucker risked everything to follow his dream. While there wasn’t a happy ending for Tucker, this film shows the challenges that entrepreneurs must face from investors, regulators, and competitors.
8. «Jerry Maguire» (1996)
Inspired by real-life sports agent Leigh Steinberg, «Jerry Maguire,» which was nominated for five Oscars and featured Best Supporting Actor Cuba Gooding Jr., tells the story of a successful sports agent who had everything and risked it all when he realized that agents should be focusing on their clients and not just dollar signs. Jerry loses everything, but his values eventually guide him in starting his own successful firm and even to true love.
Why watch it? Like «Citizen Kane,» this is another example where the protagonist realizes that there’s more to life than money and material objects. When you have this epiphany, everything else in your life will fall into place — even if the journey is bumpy along the way.
9. «The Aviator» (2004)
Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biographical drama was nominated for a whopping eleven Academy Awards. The film traces the life of Huges between 1927 and 1947 as he goes from successful film producer and an aviation magnate to a man battling obsessive–compulsive disorder.
Why watch it? Entrepreneurship is full of risk and hard work, which is why you need to blow off some steam — which was exactly what Hughes did as he builds and runs his own companies. However, what’s most inspiring about «The Aviator» is that at the height of his personal struggles, Hughes managed to defend his business dealings in front of a Senate committee. No matter what’s going on in their lives, successful entrepreneurs are tenacious and will pull themselves together when backed into a corner.
10. «Lorenzo’s Oil» (1992)
«Lorenzo’s Oil» is based on the true story of Augusto and Michaela Odone, who relentlessly searched for a cure for their son’s adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The couple devote everything they have in order to find a cure, which eventually leads them to finding an oil that improves some of Lorenzo’s symptoms. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards.
Why watch it? Film critic Roger Ebert částky it up perfectly: “It takes a heartbreaking story and pushes it to the limit, showing us the lengths of courage and imagination that people can summon when they must.”
11. «Steve Jobs» (2015)
Nominated for two Academy Awards, «Steve Jobs» is another biographical film that takes some liberties as it retells the story of Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs — specifically his exit from the company, the founding of NeXT, and his subsequent return to Apple.
Why watch it? Despite his setbacks, such as his split with Apple, product failures, and his at times heated relationships with Steve Wozniak, colleagues, and his family, Steve Jobs never gave up on his vision. In fact, it was this vision that made Apple the juggernaut it is today.
